Muhammad Imran bin Abdul Rahim (born 1988) is a Singaporean lawyer. He was listed as a senior associate at the law firm, Tan Kok Quan Partnership (TKQP) as of July 2020.[1] The practising lawyer and decorated competitive debater made headlines in July 2020 when the Reform Party politician, Charles Yeo brought forth allegations of the former's history of sexual misconduct.

Background

Imran Rahim became an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2014.[2] That same year, he was a part of the Drew & Napier LLC[3] team led by Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, that represented Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the Lee Hsien Loong v Roy Ngerng Yi Ling [2014] court case.[4] In 2019, Imran Rahim was a panellist at Regardless of Race — The Dialogue organised by OnePeople.sg in partnership with Channel News Asia.[5]

Early life & family

Imran Rahim grew up in a family where his mother was a housewife and his father was a worker at a factory in Johor, Malaysia.[6] Imran Rahim married the Singaporean blogger and online personality, Andrea Chong in March 2020.[7] In September 2020, it was announced that the couple are expecting a son.[8] That same month, it was reported that Imran Rahim resigned from his law firm, Tan Kok Quan Partnership to spend more time with his family.[9] Imran and Andrea started dating when they were both students at Victoria Junior College and have been engaged since 2018.[10]

Education

Throughout his educational years, Imran Rahim was an award-winning debater. As a student in Raffles Institution,[11] he was a finalist at the 2003 Hwa Chong JC Invitationals, and a semi-finalist at the NUS Debate Invitationals and Victoria JC Debate Invitationals that same year.[12] He subsequently went to Victoria Junior College[13] where he won the Anglo-Chinese JC Debate Invitationals in 2005.[14] Imran Rahim then furthered his studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and graduated in 2013 with a degree in law.[15] The following is a list of his achievements as a competitive debater during his undergraduate years.

Apart from participating in debate competitions, he has also adjudicated numerous tournaments and coached junior debate teams.[18]

Grassroots & community involvement

In 2018, Imran Rahim was given special mention by Singapore's education minister, Ong Ye Kung during his speech at the Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud (LBKM) Bursary Ceremony.[19] According to Minister Ong Ye Kung, Imran Rahim has been actively involved in grassroots volunteering. In 2019, Minister of Environment and Water Resources, Masagos Zulkifli highlighted Imran Rahim's efforts in providing pro bono services to the community among his other contributions in Woodlands since 2016.[20]

Newsworthy incident

Sexual misconduct allegations

Imran Rahim made headlines in July 2020 when the Singapore politician and lawyer, Charles Yeo released several Instagram videos and posts alleging that he had evidence of Imran Rahim's misconduct within the debate and law communities.[21][22] On 23 July 2020, Imran Rahim released a statement on his Instagram page that says the following:

"I am aware of the sustained attacks by Charles Yeo against me on social media. I do not know him and I do not know why he has chosen to launch these personal attacks against me. I deny the wide-ranging allegations made by Charles Yeo and will be taking the necessary steps to vindicate myself. In the meantime, I am currently assisting my employer with internal investigations."[23]

In a statement to TODAY, the Law Society revealed that no "potential complainants" had come forth to officially speak about the matter.[24] According to TODAY, Imran Rahim is seeking legal advice from Providence Law Asia.[25] On 8 September 2020, it was reported that Imran Rahim will drop his lawsuit against Charles Yeo.[9]
