About Crimewatch

Crimewatch is a Singaporean television programme produced by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) in collaboration with the Singapore Police Force (SPF). First premiering on Channel 5 on 30 November 1986, it is Singapore's longest-running informational-educational program.[3]

The series presents re-enactments of major solved criminal cases, appeals for unsolved cases, and general crime prevention advice in a Singaporean context. Presented by actual serving regular police officers, the show airs simultaneously in 4 languages: English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay.[3]

While created as a serious crime prevention tool, Crimewatch has become beloved by Singaporeans for its often unintentionally comedic scenes, dramatic acting, and meme-worthy dialogue that has taken on a life of its own in internet culture.[3]

The scene that birthed the "Melvin is no name for a gang member" meme appeared in Episode 10 of the 2016 season of Crimewatch.[1] The episode depicted a storyline about a boy named Melvin who aspired to join a local gang.[1]

The iconic dialogue

After sizing up the boy, Ah Xiong delivers the now-famous line with complete seriousness. The exact quote, with its distinctive pronunciation, goes:[1]
