Melvin is no name for a gang member Crimewatch (2016)

"Melvin is no name for a gang member" is a viral Singaporean meme originating from Episode 10 of the 2016 season of Crimewatch. The scene features a gang leader character named Ah Xiong rejecting a would-be gang recruit's real name "Melvin" as it was insufficiently intimidating, renaming him "Xiao Hu" (Little Tiger). The line became iconic due to Ah Xiong's intense delivery and distinctive pronunciation of "Melvin" as "Meowvin," spawning countless memes, parodies, and jokes at the expense of Singaporeans actually named Melvin.[1][2]

Background

About Crimewatch

Crimewatch is a Singaporean television programme produced by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) in collaboration with the Singapore Police Force (SPF). First premiering on Channel 5 on 30 November 1986, it is Singapore's longest-running informational-educational program.[3]

The series presents re-enactments of major solved criminal cases, appeals for unsolved cases, and general crime prevention advice in a Singaporean context. Presented by actual serving regular police officers, the show airs simultaneously in 4 languages: English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay.[3]

While created as a serious crime prevention tool, Crimewatch has become beloved by Singaporeans for its often unintentionally comedic scenes, dramatic acting, and meme-worthy dialogue that has taken on a life of its own in internet culture.[3]

Context of the episode

The scene that birthed the "Melvin is no name for a gang member" meme appeared in Episode 10 of the 2016 season of Crimewatch.[1] The episode depicted a storyline about a boy named Melvin who aspired to join a local gang.[1]

In the pivotal scene, Melvin approaches Ah Xiong, the gang leader, seeking membership. Ah Xiong inspects the aspiring gang member with an intense, intimidating gaze, a look that has itself become part of the meme's appeal.[1][2]

The iconic dialogue

After sizing up the boy, Ah Xiong delivers the now-famous line with complete seriousness. The exact quote, with its distinctive pronunciation, goes:[1]

"Melvin? Melvin is no name for a gang member."

What made the line particularly memorable was Ah Xiong's pronunciation of "Melvin" as "Meowvin" a distinctively Singaporean accent that added an unintentionally comedic element to the otherwise serious gang recruitment scene.[1] After rejecting the name, Ah Xiong bestows upon Melvin a new gang moniker: "Xiao Hu" (小虎), meaning "Little Tiger" in Mandarin, a name deemed more appropriate for someone trying to cultivate a tough, street-credible image.[1][2]

The "Meowvin" memes

According to The Smart Local, when this scene aired in 2016, many Singaporeans started teasing anyone named Melvin, making fun of the fact that in the series, the name was not intimidating enough for a gang member.[2]

Creative Singaporeans has also produced various forms of parody content:

  • Pet videos featuring cats or dogs named Melvin with the audio overlay[4]
  • People referencing the name “Melvin” to the meme[5][6]
  • People with the same name sharing that they’re not a gangster[7]
