Alex Yeo Sheng Chye (born 1979) is a Singaporean politician and a lawyer.[1][2] In June 2020, he was unveiled as a People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 Singapore General Elections and contested in Aljunied GRC.[3][4]

Background[edit | edit source]

After being called to the bar in Australia after his degree studies, Alex Yeo was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2012.[5] He has also served as a Foreign Service Officer (Political) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).[6] As of 2020, he is the director of a law firm, Niru & Co LLC.[7]

Alex Yeo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics from the National University of Singapore (NUS). In 2007, he graduated from the University of Sydney in New South Wales with a law degree.[8]

Post-graduate studies[edit | edit source]

Alex Yeo received his Master's degree in public administration at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in NUS.[9]

People's Action Party (PAP) - Grassroots involvement[edit | edit source]

Potong Pasir[edit | edit source]

Alex Yeo started as a grassroots volunteer in Potong Pasir in 2014, before becoming a grassroots leader in 2015.[10] He was the PAP branch secretary and the vice-chairman of the Citizens Consultative Committee (CCC) in Potong Pasir.[11]

Paya Lebar[edit | edit source]

In January 2017, Alex Yeo left his posts in Potong Pasir when he was named as the branch chairperson for the PAP in the Paya Lebar ward.[12] As a grassroots leader, he has seen through community initiatives like the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and Wills programme and the Health and Wellness Programme that provides free medical screenings to the seniors in the constituency.[13]

General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Aljunied GRC)[edit | edit source]

Alex Yeo was introduced as People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[14] According to the PAP website, his vision is to:  

"[Act] Beyond the Call of Duty, otherwise known as the ABCD spirit – it is a motto that left a deep imprint on me while I was serving at Potong Pasir and I have since brought it with me to Paya Lebar."[15]

With 40 per cent of the votes, the Aljunied GRC PAP team lost to the Workers' Party team that was led by Pritam Singh.[16]
