Nadia Rahmat, also known as SkinnyKatWoman on Instagram (Instagram profile), is a Singaporean model and events coordinator. In 2015, she was the only Singaporean model to be featured in a Marc by Marc Jacobs’ advertisement.[1] Before she was selected for the Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign, Nadia had little professional modelling experience.[2] The following year, she was selected by Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc’s to be a model representing Singapore in ‘The Atlas of Beauty’ project.[3]

Background

In a 2016 interview with CLEO, Nadia shared that she grew up feeling insecure about her appearance due to the people that she had surrounded herself with throughout primary and secondary school.[4] She revealed that after a period of self-reflection, she decided to give less regard to others' opinion of her and embrace her uniqueness.

As of February 2019, she is represented by Upfront Models modelling agency.[5] Apart from modelling, Nadia also works as an events manager at Kilo Collective, a hospitality group. Prior to her events management role at Kilo Collective, Nadia interned at The Straits Times’ online news site RazorTV and worked full-time as an event planner with events group Super 0.[6]

Career highlights

Kilo Collective Pte Ltd (April 2015 - Present Day)

Nadia is the Events, Marketing & VIP Manager at Kilo Collective.[7] Kilo Collective is an F&B and entertainment group which runs Kilo Kitchen, Camp Kilo Charcoal Club and Kilo Lounge. Nadia’s role in Kilo Collective involves public relations, communicating with clientele as well as organizing in-house and private events. Under Kilo Collective, Nadia has hosted events such as Lufthansa Group’s launch of their Singapore office and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty's launch of their new products.[8]

The Atlas of Beauty Project (2016)

The Atlas of Beauty Project was a photobook project by Mihaela Noroc to photograph women from around the globe and celebrate their beauty regardless of "race, money, or trends".[9] Nadia Rahmat was one of the few Singaporeans that had been featured in Mihaela’s project. Nadia's feature in the project received mixed responses from Singaporean netizens. Some had felt that she was a "weird representation of Singapore" while others voiced their disapproval of her looks and even skin colour.[10] In an e-mail to The Newpaper, Nadia responded to the crticisms by stating her hopes that these individuals would look past skin colour and outward appearances.[11]

Marc Jacobs Spring Campaign (2015)

Nadia was one of the 11 individuals that had been chosen from 100,000 submissions worldwide for the Marc by Marc Jacobs’ social media campaign #CastMeMarc.[12] As one of the 50 intiial individuals who had been shortlisted, she was flown to New York in October where she made it through the second round of castings.[13] At 24 years old, she was the only Singaporean model selected for the Marc by Marc Jacobs advertisement.[14] Her submission for the campaign attracted some critique from netizens. Those who were more conservative commented that her submission photo showed too much skin, while others did not consider her to be a adequate representation for Singaporeans.[15]

Modelling and media appearances[16]

Nadia had been rejected by three local modelling agencies for not fitting into the ideal look that they had perceived to be fitting for the Singaporean market.[17] In 2011, Nadia participated in The New Paper New Face but did not make it past the second round of the competition.[18] In a 2017 interview with Honeycombers, she revealed that she begun her modelling career "mainly for fun and gaining exposure".[19] Since then, she has modelled and received sponsorships from established brands which she documents on her Instagram page. As of February 2019, she is represented by Upfront Models modelling agency.[5]
