Rajid Ahamed, better known by his stage name Yung Raja, is a Singaporean rapper and songwriter recognised for his bilingual rapping style — performing rap music in both Tamil and English.[1] Through his unique rapping style, Yung Raja has amassed fans in both Singapore and Malaysia.[2] In June 2018, Yung Raja was featured on MTV Asia’s Spotlight artist of the month.[3] In 2019, Yung Raja performed the first rap and hip-hop segment at the Singapore’s annual National Day Parade. Alongside fellow performers, Fariz Jabba (Muhammad Fariz Abdul Rashid) and Wheelsmith (Danial Bawthan), the trio rapped to the song, “stand up, Lion city, stand up”.[4][5]

Background

Rajid Ahamed had previously studied at Ngee Ann Polytechnic where he graduated with a Diploma in Mass Communication Studies in 2015.[6]

Acting career

Before his music career, Rajid Ahamed was an actor. He forayed into acting at 13 years old when he landed a role in Channel 5’s Fighting Spiders. Following which, Rajid took on various minor roles in local television and film production. While filming Ah Boys To Men 3L Frogmen, he met fellow actor Fariz Jabba (Muhammad Fariz Abdul Rashid) who suggested that he enter the music scene.[7] The pair bonded over a shared interest in hip-hop and rap music. They hung out at clubs like Refuge and Cherry Discotheque, studying the crowd and honing their craft.[8]

Music debut (2017)

Yung Raja made his mark in Singapore's music scene with his single, Mustafa (2018).

In 2017, Rajid debuted as MC Raja releasing 2 singles titled Bounce and Tamilian.[29] During this time, he was a part of the *Scape Music Talent Development Programme - mentored by Joe Flizzow and FlightSch (Ezekiel Keran).[30][31] In 2018, Rajid changed his stage name to Yung Raja. He was signed to M03 records (Made You Famous) with FlightSch as his manager.[32][33]

As the youngest and only son in a family of 6, Rajid Ahamed was usually referred to as “chinna thambi” among family members. This translates as “Young”, forming the first half of his stage name. The word “Raja” is derived from the name of a renowned Indian film composer, Ilaiyaraaja.[34]

Mustafa (2018)

On 28 June 2018, Yung Raja released his official debut single, Mustafa, following the viral success of the cover releases — Poori Gang (Gucci Gang) and Pathuko Thambi (Bartier Cardi).[35] The song was a tribute to the 24-hour shopping complex, Mustafa, which was located a few blocks away from Yung Raja’s home.[36] Within a week of its release, the single landed in 3rd place on Spotify Malaysia’s Viral charts.[37] As of 2019, the music video for Mustafa has garnered over 1.5 million views on YouTube.[38]

Yo! MTV RAPS ASIA (2018-2019)

On 19 June 2018, Yung Raja and Korean-American rapper, Jessi co-hosted a one-off episode reboot of the renowned hip-hop reality series YO! MTV RAPS.[39][40]

Co-host with Kim Lee

Following the premiere of the first episode, MTV Asia released a 10 part series in 2019. The show spanned from April to August 2019 with Yung Raja co-hosting the show with DJ and model, Kim Lee. Each episode features upcoming artistes across Asia, game segments hosted by Malaysian rapper, Zamaera, and discussions about lifestyle, music and culture. Each episode ends off with a cypher showcase hosted by Malaysian rapper, Joe Flizzow.[41][42]

Personal life

Family

Rajid Ahamed is the youngest of 4 siblings. He is the only son and has three older sisters, Ashika, Saleema and Riffaya.[43][44] His parents were previously from South India, Tamil Nadu (Arantangi, Nachiyar Koil and Thanjavur) before relocating to Singapore in 1992.[45][46][47][48]


Rajid Ahamed’s mother is Ayisha Siddeeqa.[49] His father is Yousuf Rowther Rajid Ahamed, who is the president of the Tamil Debate Show (தமிழ்ப் பட்டிமன்றக் கலைக் கழகம்) and a council member of the Tamils Representative Council (தமிழர் பேரவை).[50][51] Yousuf Rowther Rajid Ahamed was previously a Physics professor at the Rajah Serfoji Government College for 18 years.[52]

Early life

Born on 14 December 1995, Rajid Ahamed is a first-generation Singaporean.[53] Rajid is an ardent hip-hop fan. He heard his first rap song, “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem, at 8 years old and was hooked on the genre.[54] Throughout his childhood, Rajid looked up to Kollywood and Hollywood actors, Rakinikanth and Will Smith as sources of inspiration.[55][56]

Yung Raja’s music influences include Drake and Travis Scott —- due to their ability to positively reach out to many individuals.[57] Additionally, Yung Raja draws inspiration from his father’s poems and short stories.[58]
