Background

Education

Tyen Rasif went to CHIJ Toa Payoh (Primary) before pursuing Theatre Studies in School of the Arts (SOTA) for six years. While in primary and secondary school, Tyen thought she would be a lawyer like her mother and father. However, she also wanted to become an actress. Tyen decided against pursuing a university education in drama overseas and was accepted into Yale-NUS College in 2014. She dropped out of Yale-NUS soon after.[1]

During her gap year, Tyen became a certified personal trainer.[2] Inspired by the show 'Shark Tank', Tyen re-entered university, pursuing a degree in Business Management from Singapore Management University (SMU) with a major in Marketing.[3]

Tyen Rasif started weightlifting in 2014.[4] Since then, she has competed in physique competitions like the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) and Fitness Asian Championships.[5] [6] By 2018, Tyen could deadlift up to 120 kg and squats up to 80 kg.[7]

In a 2018 interview with Today, Tyen shared that she had suffered from depression, anxiety as well as an eating disorder during her teenage years. She weighed a mere 38 kg back then.[8] Since her change in lifestyle, Tyen recorded that she weighed 55kg in 2018.[9] In her own words, Tyen shared that:

"Bodybuilding taught me how to take control of my body and the importance of setting and working towards goals." [10]

Competitive achievements

Tyen participated in her first bodybuilding competition in 2016.[11] In a 2016 interview with Yahoo! News, Tyen shared that her 72-year-old Jewish grandmother was her fitness inspiration.[12]

Early life

Tyen Rasif was born to Joyce Fong and David Rasif on 23 November 1995. She is of Dutch, Javanese and Chinese descent.[22]

Tyen’s biological father, David Rasif, is an ex-lawyer and a fugitive wanted by Singapore. In 2006, he had absconded with S$11.3 million of his client’s money and managed to escape Singapore. He is still currently wanted by Singapore for this issue.[23] Since then, the family has not had any contact with him.

In a 2018 interview with Today, Tyen shared that her mental and physical health worsened when her father, the rogue lawyer David Rasif, left her family when she was 11 years old.[24] Tyen was single-handedly raised by her biological mother, Joyce Fong.[25] At 18 years old, Tyen moved out from her home to live with her then-boyfriend Vishaal after getting into a fight with her mother. The fight stemmed from Tyen’s decision to drop out of Yale-NUS to pursue a gap year.[26] Tyen reconciled with her mother following her break up with Vishaal in 2015. [27]

Past relationship

Tyen Rasif started dating Vishaal during their teens and were together for about five to six years. While they were together, Tyen and Vishaal met Jack from Jack and Rai who introduced them to music gigs.[28] [29] However, they broke up in 2015 "to discover themselves as individuals". Since then, the two have remained close friends and performed together.[30][31] As of November 2019,  Tyen and Vishaal are resident musicians at Timbre+ having played gigs at bars like Mad Men Attic Bar, Wala Wala and Timbre Substation.[32][33][34]

In 2018, Tyen shared that she remained single throughout university although she had gone on a few dates.[35]

Clicknetwork (2018 - present)

Tyen Rasif hosts a segment on Singapore’s online video network, Clicknetwork TV, called ‘No Sweat’. The show aims to help its audience incorporate health and fitness into their daily routines. Tyen has hosted episodes about healthy food, work-out apparel and simple exercises, to name a few. The first episode aired in August 2018 and as of December 2019, there are 31 episodes. [36]

Miss Universe Singapore (2018)

Tyen Rasif was a finalist in Miss Universe Singapore 2018.[37] She drew on her muscular physique to set herself apart from other Miss Universe contestants, simultaneously challenging the stereotypes of beauty pageant contestants.[38] On top of having an athletic body type, she was one of the shortest MUS 2018 contestants standing at 165 cm.[39]

Although she had aimed to promote positive body image throughout the pageant, Tyen later confessed in a YouTube video that she still felt pressured to fit a certain body type and wanted to lose her muscles during the competition.[40]

YouTube channel (2017 - present)

With over 44,000 subscribers (as of December 2019), Tyen regularly uploads videos on her personal YouTube channel. Her regular uploads include storytimes, work-out videos and travel vlogs.[41]

Her video titled ‘How To Lose 1 kg in 1 day’ is the most-watched video on her channel with over 2.7 million views.[42] In 2018, she designed a prenatal fitness and diet plan for her pregnant sister, Jade Rasif, and documented it on YouTube.[43]
