''“In retrospect, I am honoured to be able to represent Singapore at the SEA Games. I’ve been through so many other overseas competitions and I’ve always been the only Singaporean there. This time though, many Singaporean representatives joined me on an official and more internationally recognised stage. More importantly, the game is being broadcast on mainstream media which helps provide a different perspective on eSports and gaming.”<ref name=":2" />''</blockquote>

Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz is content creator and strategist under the personal YouTube channel, Thomas K. He is also known for his brief career as a competitive StarCraft II player.[1] He is noted for using the ‘Protoss’ race in the game.[2] Throughout his eSports career, Blysk has won several tournaments like the SEA Legacy of the Void (LOTV) Beta Anniversary Tournament in 2015. In 2019, he represented Singapore in the 2019 SEA Games alongside players like Wong “NutZ” Jeng Yih for Dota 2, and managed to clinch the Silver medal after losing 4-1 to Caviar Acampado.[2][3][4] Apart from competitive gaming, Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz is a YouTube personality. He uploads vlogs on his personal YouTube channel and has been featured in the videos of Singaporean channels —  The Smart Local (TSL) and Wah!Banana.[5][6]

As of November 2019, Thomas’ YouTube channel has over 3.1 million views and 16,300 subscribers.[7] On Instagram, Thomas has also managed to amass over 19,300 followers.[8]

Background

Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz attended Radin Mas Primary School and Gan Eng Seng School. In 2016, he obtained a Diploma in Communication and Media Studies at Singapore Polytechnic (SP).[9] During his time at SP, Thomas was a part of the student emcees club, SP Comperes.[10]

StarCraft II (2010)

As a secondary school student, Thomas frequented LAN cafes to play Dota with his friends. Following the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in 2010, Thomas was hooked and captivated by the game’s diverse strategic options, the use of reaction time, mouse dexterity and complexity of the game play. Thomas then began watching tournament games which brought him closer to the eSports community.[11][12]

Thomas was scouted by the team, Flash eSports when he defeated the top-ranking player at a local tournament that had been hosted at a LAN shop.[13] Thomas adopted the username “Blysk” which is Polish for “Flash”.[14]

In 2016, Blysk retired briefly leaving team MYinsanity to serve his mandatory National Service in Singapore.[15][16] He later resumed his competitive career, playing for Downfall Gaming in 2017.[17]

Family & early life

Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz was born in Germany on 23 November 1995 to a Polish father and Chinese mother. He relocated to Singapore at 4 years old, accompanying his mother who had found a job as a cellist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.[18] Thomas is the younger of two siblings. He has an older brother, Jan Kopankiewicz.[19][20] Thomas currently lives in Singapore with his mother and stepfather while his biological father and older brother are living in Berlin.[21]

“My parents—my mom and stepdad—were not at all supportive. They were very against it at the start. It was during my teenage years, where I’d want to go against my parents and rebel. At the same time, gaming full-time in Singapore was unheard of because of the emphasis on the university paper race.”[22]

Career highlights

SEA Games (2019)

Held in the Philippines, the 2019 SEA games is the first multi-sports event to include 5 eSports medal events — Dota 2, StarCraft II, Tekken 7, Arena of Valour and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.[23] In May 2019, Blysk battled it out with veteran StarCraft player nirvAna and Resurgence team member, Revenant before emerging as the winner for the Singapore Esports Association (SGEA) national qualifiers.[24][25]

Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz and Toh “Lobo” Wei Liang Alvin, who finished second, were nominated to represent Singapore in StarCraft II for the 30th SEA Games.[26][27] On 10 December 2019, Thomas came in 2nd place at the SEA Games.[28]

“In retrospect, I am honoured to be able to represent Singapore at the SEA Games. I’ve been through so many other overseas competitions and I’ve always been the only Singaporean there. This time though, many Singaporean representatives joined me on an official and more internationally recognised stage. More importantly, the game is being broadcast on mainstream media which helps provide a different perspective on eSports and gaming.”[22]

Media coverage

The Straits Times (2019)

In 2019, Thomas Kopankiewicz was featured on the Straits Times just prior to his final game at the 2019 SEA Games. The then-eSports athlete was interviewed about the game Starcraft II, as well as his experience representing Singapore at the game.[2] He described the journey as a "crazy Cinderella story".

Thomas eventually took home a Silver medal after the finals, which took place on 10 December 2019.[2]

HYPE & STUFF (2020)

In an interview with the online magazine HYPE & STUFF, Thomas Kopankiewicz shared his disappointment at the results of the 2019 SEA Games.[4] He cited his “Go for Gold” attitude towards the events, which inevitably made him feel as if he had lost the game even though he clinched silver.[4]

Thomas spoke about how he coped with Singaporean society’s conservative attitudes towards eSports, and even shared how his passions in gaming led to tension between him and his parents.[4] He also talked about some major sacrifices he made for the Games, including giving up his German passport.[4]

CNA (2021)

Thomas Kopankiewicz was featured on CNA’s Game Nation series, a programme covering the stories of 6 of Singapore’s top eSports players.[169] In the short clip, Thomas broke down the gameplay of Starcraft II, which he competed in at the 2019 SEA Games. He also shared other ways he trained his focus and determination for the sport, including going for fitness and self-defence classes.

AsiaOne Online (2023)

In February 2023, Thomas Kopankiewicz appeared on an AsiaOne feature after his TikTok went viral.[170] The influencer discovered that several of his kitchen tiles were falling off and he eventually had to duck-tape them back on, because he had “just left [his] job” and “[didn’t] have the money to renovate this place”.[170]

The TikTok garnered mixed reactions, with some netizens poking fun at Thomas’ predicament, while other concerned ones suggested reasons for why this incident occurred.[170]
