Tan Kiat How (born 1977) is a Singaporean politician and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) where he was also the Commissioner of the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC).[1] In June 2020, he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 Singapore General Elections and is contesting in East Coast GRC.[2]

Background

Tan Kiat How was appointed as the CEO of IMDA in January 2017 and stepped down from his position on 20 June 2020 to enter politics.[3] Before joining the IMDA, he was the Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI)[4] and the programme director at the Pioneer Generation Office.[5] He also has experience working at the Ministry of Finance.[6] He started his career as an IT consultant for the Ministry of Education.[7][8]

Early life & family

As a secondary school and pre-university student, Tan Kiat How represented his schools in gymnastics. As of June 2020, Tan Kiat How is married and expecting his first child in August.[9][10]

Education

Tan Kiat How has two degrees and one master's degree. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 2001 with degrees in economics and computer engineering.[11]

Post-graduate studies

In 2002, Tan Kiat How received his master's degree in management science and engineering from Stanford University.[12] He was also a Mason Fellow at Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government from 2013 to 2014.[13][14]

Community & grassroots outreach

Tan Kiat How has reached out to East Coast residents and businesses about digitalisation programmes through online seminars.[15][16]

Politics

General Elections 2020 - Candidate (East Coast GRC)

Tan Kiat How was introduced as People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 25 June 2020.[17] On the PAP website, he is quoted to have said the following:

"I want to be able to play a part to keep Singapore going, and making this a better home for generations to come. As a career civil servant, politics is an extension of my service to my country which has given me so much."[18]
