Lee Hsien Loong pink shirt lore

Lee Hsien Loong's pink shirt refers to the recurring wardrobe choice of Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who frequently wears pink shirts during important speeches and televised national addresses. The distinctive choice became a subject of public attention and internet memes, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.[1][2][3] Lee has stated that he wears pink shirts on the advice of his television production team, who recommended the color for its appearance on screen.[2]

Rise of a viral meme in 2020

In March 2020, during Singapore's circuit breaker preparations, graphic designer Izyanti Asa'ari created a series of Instagram Stories analyzing the different pink shirts Lee had worn over the years.[1] She noted that "pink is the Prime Minister's prime colour of choice when national announcements need to be made" and compiled screenshots of his outfits across various speeches with commentary on each style.[1]

The Instagram posts were reposted on Facebook on 13 March 2020 and spread across social media, receiving numerous shares and reactions.[1] Media outlets reported that the Prime Minister's wardrobe choices had "become a topic of interest" following the viral posts.[1]

On 15 March 2020, Lee posted a video clip of a community visit to Instagram with a caption noting an "astute observation on my sartorial choices," acknowledging the public discussion about his wardrobe.[1]

On 21 April 2020, Lee addressed the nation wearing a navy blue shirt with matching tie to announce an extension of the lockdown, departing from his usual pink.[4]

Public speculation

Social media users began to humorously correlate Lee's shirt colors with the tone of news announcements. Following Lee's 3rd April 2020 speech in a pink shirt introducing the circuit breaker lockdown, some users joked that they "never wanted to see PM Lee wear another pink shirt ever again."[5] Online commentary reflected that viewers were "anticipating what colour shirt we were going to see him wear, and wondering if pink means good or bad news."[5]

Various theories have been proposed in online discussions about the choice of pink. One hypothesis suggests that pastel pink projects a softer, more approachable image for a male politician.[6][7] Commentators have noted that the color might create a warm, friendly appearance suited to Lee's communication style.[8]

Lee's explanation

Despite such speculation, Lee Hsien Loong himself has downplayed any mystical meaning behind the pink shirts. His explanation has been straightforward and pragmatic. In the 2015 Facebook Q&A, he revealed that he started wearing pink often on the advice of his TV production team, who felt that pink was a suitable color for him on screen.[4] “My TV producer tells me to,” Lee said of his wardrobe choice, suggesting that pink looks good under studio lights and complements his appearance better than other colors.[2]

In other words, the decision was guided by television aesthetics, perhaps pink contrasts nicely with the background and makes him visually stand out without appearing harsh. This practical reason indicates that there is no official political or personal symbolism intended in the color; it is primarily about looking presentable and engaging on camera. Lee has humorously acknowledged that beyond that, “I don’t have a whole wardrobe of pink shirts. I do have other colours!”[7] reinforcing that pink is not a lucky charm or personal favorite per se, but rather one option he uses frequently because it works well.[7]
