Jasmine Sokko (Jasmine Wong Chu Qing) is a Singaporean electronic music artist, known for wearing a signature visor or mask during public appearances. She rose to fame with the release of her hit debut single ‘1057’ which peaked at #1 on Spotify’s Singapore Top 50 Viral Chart in October 2016.[1] Her participation in Rave Now - a Chinese electronic music competition - has allowed her to gain traction in Asia.[2] She has also been the opening act for The Chainsmokers, MØ and Lauv. Jasmine Sokko was awarded the Best Southeast Asia Act a the MTV EMAs in November 2019.[3]

Music genre

Jasmine Sokko first dabbled in music when she saved up for a guitar in primary school.[4] Subsequently, she joined several rock bands. After realising that her voice was unsuitable for the rock genre, she turned to electronic music.[5][6] Jasmine got into songwriting when she joined the National Arts Council’s NOISE Singapore Mentorship during her ‘A’ Levels. In a 2016 interview, Jasmine named Canadian artist Grimes and Australian artist Flume as her musical inspirations.[7]

In university, Jasmine was a member of SMU Stereometa, the campus’ DJ club.[8]

Mask

Jasmine’s practise of wearing a mask started when filming the music video for her song '1057'.[9] The music video was published on YouTube on 23 September 2016.[10] Since then, it has become a part of her artist persona.
