Politics

General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Sengkang GRC)

Jamus Lim was introduced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[13][14] He is contesting in his first General Election (GE), having returned to Singapore after twenty years of studying and working abroad.[15][16] In a video posted on Facebook, he shared his reason for running in GE 2020. He says:

"I deeply believe in the importance of competing ideas and diverse perspectives for the 21st-century economy to thrive, for ensuring social cohesion and for healthy democracy".[17]

According to his profile on the Workers’ Party (WP) website, his hopes for Singapore are:[18]

1. A home where all Singaporeans possess a deep sense of our journey together, built on a foundation of shared values and common aspirations.
2. A progressive and prosperous Singapore that offers diverse opportunities for our young to realise their dreams, without forgetting the weak and vulnerable among us.
3. A recognition that Singapore’s future challenges are different from those of the past, and will require policies that are realised only after earnest and meaningful debate.

He also intends to highlight issues relating to Singapore’s “pressure cooker” of an education system, which he claims has not produced the opportunities and wages it promised. He says:

“I believe that we have allowed superficial success in our educational system to blind us to the fact that… our education system is not preparing our children to take on and create good jobs for the future.”[19][20]
