Jaime Teo (born 17 April 1977) is a Singaporean artiste managed by FLY Entertainment (as of January 2020).[1] Jaime first shot to fame when she was crowned Miss Singapore Universe in 2001.[2] Shortly after, she signed a contract with Mediacorp. In 2003, Jaime debuted as a part of One-Fifth (a Singapore-Taiwan girl group) while still juggling acting and hosting.[3][4][5] After marrying Daniel Ong in 2007, the couple founded Twelve Cupcakes in 2011.[6] Jaime leads an active lifestyle, often being pictured in fitness magazines among other features.[7]

Education

Jaime went to St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School before enrolling in Temasek Junior College.[8][9] After 3 months, she switched to Ngee Ann Polytechnic where she earned a Diploma in Computer Studies.[10][11][12] Jaime reportedly changed schools as she did not want to study Mandarin at the time.[13] She then went on to Monash University in 2000 and graduated with a Bachelor of Computing on 4 October 2003.[14][15]

Miss Universe Singapore (2001)

Jaime entered the Miss Singapore Universe pageant at 24 years old.[16] She subsequently won the beauty pageant and was crowned Miss Singapore Universe.[17] Following that, Jaime represented Singapore in Puerto Rico for the 50th Miss Universe.[18]

Jaime underwent corrective orthodontic surgery 2 years before signing up for Miss Universe Singapore. This procedure was done partly because she wanted to enter the competition.[19]

Mediacorp contract

Jaime was awarded a Mediacorp contract following her success in Miss Singapore Universe.[20] She signed the contract on 16 March 2001.[21] Under Mediacorp, Jaime hosted and acted in shows like The Mission and Double Happiness.[22] In 2002, she was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award in the Star Awards.[23]

Shortly after signing her Mediacorp contract, Jaime was selected to audition for a place in One Fifth (五分之一), a mandopop girl group.[24] She was successful in her audition and represented Singapore as a member of the group.

Debut & disbanding

The group debuted their first album on 11 April 2003 during a press conference in Taipei. The group released a CD and a VCD, containing 10 and 2 tracks respectively.[25] In preparation for their debut, Jaime had moved to Taipei for 5 months for vocal and dance training.[26]

Unfortunately, the group was disbanded in August that same year. Their venture failed because of “bad timing”, given that they debuted at the peak of the SARS outbreak.[27]

Twelve Cupcakes (2011)

Founding

Jaime Teo founded Twelve Cupcakes in 2011 with Daniel Ong.[76] After perfecting the recipe for all the cupcakes to be sold in-store, the couple opened their first brick and mortar store at United Square.[77] When the brand first started, Jaime iced all the cupcakes by hand.[78]

Expansion

Twelve Cupcakes was registered as a company in 2012.[79] Shortly after, Jaime and Daniel opened up stores in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia.[80][81] The brand expanded rapidly, opening 11 outlets in 2 years of operation.[82] Their menu also grew to include honey cakes. Jaime and Daniel then engaged in product diversification, opening Dulce and Sucre and Cookies For Sid.[83][84]

Dhunseri Group (2016)

After Jaime and Daniel’s divorce in 2016, Twelve Cupcakes was sold to Dhunseri Group for $2.5 million.[85] Jaime and Daniel remained as consultants for the company for a year before leaving Twelve Cupcakes.[86] Since then, they are no longer involved in the company’s processes.

Personal life

Marriage & divorce

Jaime and Daniel met on the set of Mr Kiasu back in 2001.[87] They were friends for 3 years before they started dating. After dating for 2 years, the couple announced their engagement in July 2007.[88] Daniel had proposed to Jaime with a 1-carat solitaire diamond ring on the road outside their new home.[89]

The solemnisation was held on 9 September 2007 at Amara Sanctuary Resort in Sentosa.[90] The pair moved into their matrimonial house in November that year.[91] Their wedding reception was held at Swisshotel The Stamford on 13 April 2008 with 400 guests in attendance.[92][93] In April 2010, Jaime gave birth to their daughter, Renee Ong.[94]

Jaime and Daniel divorced in August 2016.[95][96] The two remain friends after the divorce and co-parent Renee with an agreeable joint custody timetable.[97][98][99] On hearing Daniel’s proposal in 2019 to artist Fay Tan, Jaime had congratulated the couple.[100]

Early life

Jaime was brought up single-handedly by her mother during her teenage years.[101] Her parents separated when she was a month-old infant. In a 2018 interview, Jaime shared that she was not close to her biological father, who had, unfortunately, committed suicide when she was 21 years old.[102]

At 17 years old, Jaime ran away from home after a big fight with her mother. She lived at a friend’s house for 2 years before earning enough to find a place for herself.[103] During this period, Jaime worked as a waitress to pay for her daily expenses and as a receptionist during her holidays to pay for her school fees.[104] Jaime was also bulimic and suicidal at this point.[105][106] Despite these challenges, she completed her diploma in computing.

Jaime moved back home in 2002 after 8 years of living alone. Jaime and her mother have since reconciled and are closer than ever. Jaime often posts pictures of her mother and older sister, Angie Teo, on Instagram.[107]

Hobbies

Fitness

Jaime is most active on Instagram as of 2020. She dedicates the majority of her posts to her workout sessions. Her fitness journey began as early as 2014, with many people viewing her as a “fitspo” (fitness inspiration).[108][109][110][111]

Jaime’s fitness journey has led to her being featured in several magazines.[112][113] Notably, in 2016, she came in second place in the women's 5.2 km category for Standard Chartered Marathon's official warm-up.[114] Aside from being a certified CPR and AED provider, Jaime also has a personal trainer certification.[115][116]

Art

Jaime picked up painting in 2015, honing her skills from YouTube videos.[117] As her skills improved, she started to sell her paintings on Instagram and Carousell.[118][119] Occasionally, Jaime sells her artworks at bazaars.[120] Jaime has also opened an art space of her own called The Jme Space.[121]
