Background

Gerald Koh went to St. Gabriel’s Secondary School and subsequently, Catholic Junior College.[4] Similar to Jean Danker, Gerald Koh studied at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where he obtained a Diploma in Mass Communication and ran the campus radio station, Radio Heatwave. His experience at Radio Heatwave developed his passion for radio broadcasting.[5] In 2012, Gerald Koh was given the Radio Heatwave Alumni Recognition Award in recognition of his time with the campus radio station. The first song Gerald introduced on radio was ‘Breakeven’ by The Script.[6]

Boy Thunder

The moniker, ‘Boy Thunder’ came about when Gerald was interning at HOT FM 91.3. At the time, he had the responsibility of driving the station’s van which was called ‘The Thunder Truck’.[7]

Personal life

On 20 February 2016, Gerald Koh was wedded to Thia Zhi Xin Geralyn. The couple met in 2010 through a radio contest. Gerald was hosting a giveaway of autographed Adam Lambert posters.[8][9] Fellow radio presenters Justin Ang and Vernon A. (The Muttons), Joakim Gomez and Kimberly Wang were present at the wedding.[10]

In March 2013, Gerald Koh had strongly hinted his intentions of getting married by enlisting the help of Adam Lambert. Before Adam Lambert’s concert in Singapore, Gerald Koh had him pose for a photograph with a sign that read: “Say yes to Gerald. He is a good catch!”. In October 2013, Gerald Koh proposed to Zhi Xin in Paris.[11][12]

Gerald Koh is a big fan of Disney. Stating in an interview with The New Paper, his love for Disney comes from his personal preference towards family-friendly venues.[13][14] He is also a supporter of various idols such as One Direction, Justin Bieber and the K-pop group, BTS. He came to know about BTS after attending the HallyuPopFest in 2018. Gerald Koh tweets frequently about the members in the group and has mentioned Kim Seok-jin to be his favourite.[15][16]

Career highlights

As of September 2019, Gerald Koh and Kimberly Wang are co-hosts for the segment 'Get Up with Gerald & Kim'.

Radio

In the early months of 2014, Gerald Koh left HOT FM 91.3 intending to complete his degree studies and to spend more time with his family. After further discussions, Gerald resumed his radio career and joined 987FM on 9 June 2014 where he hosted the evening show ‘Itchy Pyjamas’. Inspired by the humour behind 'The Muttons', Gerald Koh thought up the name of his new solo show on 987FM.[17][18]

Drawing inspiration from radio veterans Jean Danker and Rod Monteiro, there have been numerous instances where Gerald Koh has shown his dedication to his listeners.

Between 2011 and 2012, Gerald Koh had the opportunity to interview One Direction. He declined Sony Music Singapore’s initial offer but proposed if he could bring 2 listeners along with him. Within 3 weeks, Gerald Koh conceptualised a campaign plan which resulted in two listeners becoming the first fans in Asia to meet the band.[38][39] He has also brought a picnic basket to a listener’s house when he discovered that she could not attend a 987 Picnic in the Park event due to an operation the previous day.[40]

Guinness World Record (2013)

On 23 August 2013, it was confirmed that Gerald Koh and Adam Piperdy had set a world record for the longest marathon radio music show by a duo.[71] The show lasted over three days starting from 20 March 2013. The duo clocked a total of 77 hours and 11 minutes, beating the previous record of 74 hours and 3 minutes by a British radio station.[72][73][74][75]

At the time, both Gerald and Adam were working for HOT FM 91.3. They hosted the live show inside a glass container at Plaza Singapura. Their feat won them a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Since then, the record has been challenged and broken by various radio talk show hosts around the globe.[76]
