Fariz Jabba (born on 13 November 1996 as Muhammad Fariz Abdul Rashid) is a Singaporean rapper, dancer and singer.[1] His music is recognisable through its bilingual rap verses. In 2018, Fariz Jabba’s debut single Ape Sia generated over a million views on YouTube within four months of its release.[2] As of March 2020, Fariz Jabba has over 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with the majority coming from Singapore and Malaysia. In 2019, Fariz Jabba performed the first rap and hip-hop segment at the Singapore’s annual National Day Parade alongside Yung Raja (Rajid Ahamed) and Wheelsmith (Danial Bawthan).[3][4]

Early life & family

Fariz is the youngest of four siblings. He has two older sisters, Farah and Fadhila and an older brother, Fadzri - a local comedian who goes by the moniker, Fakkah Fuzz.[5][6][7] Fariz was introduced to hip-hop and R&B at a young age through his brother’s personal CD collection. The collection included albums like Confessions by Usher and tracks such as Superstar by Jamilah.[8]

Education

Fariz attended Queenstown Primary School and Gan Eng Seng Secondary School. He served his national service with the Singapore Police Force.[9]

Music

Music debut (2017)

In 2017, Fariz took part in a freestyle rap contest on Instagram. His entry went viral and caught the attention of fixtures in the regional music scene, including SonaOne. Before the contest, Fariz had already been posting short homemade video clips of raps and remixes on social media. He continued doing so after his success. One of his uploads titled Kunci Gang (a Gucci Gang remix) caught the attention of Malaysian hip-hop veteran, Joe Flizzow, and had earned him a spot on the online rap cypher show 16 Baris.[10] This opportunity propelled Fariz further into the limelight.[11][12]

M03 Records

In a 2018 interview with Bandwagon TV, Fariz Jabba and Yung Raja (Rajid Ahamed) revealed that they had become close friends after meeting at a casting session for Ah Boys To Men 3 (2015). Following Fariz's Instagram success in 2017, he roped in Rajid to enter the local music scene with him.[13][14] In 2018 the duo signed with M03 Records. That same year, Fariz Jabba had also been recruited for the Shine x Talent Development Programme.[15][16] His stage name is a combination of his first name and the word "Jabba" from the hip-hop dance crew "Jabbawockeez".[17]

Discography

Fariz Jabba is a fan of Tupac and is inspired by artistes like Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Michael Jackson.[18][19]
