Ase Wang (born 26 November 1981) is a Singaporean actress, model and entrepreneur based in Bangkok, Thailand.[1][2][3] She has graced the covers of numerous magazines and was voted 'Sexiest Asian' by FHM magazine five times in her career.[4][5] As of May 2020, Ase has over 308,000 followers on Instagram.

Background

Being of Chinese and Swedish descent, Ase is fluent in Swedish and English and speaks basic Mandarin and Thai. She had picked up the Thai language while establishing her media presence in Bangkok,[6] having also had a language coach present on sets to help her pronounce her lines.[7]

Early life & family

Ase was born on 26 November 1981 to a Singaporean Chinese father, John Wong Teck Fong and a Swedish mother, Inger Wang.[8][9][10][11] She was raised in Singapore as an only child. Her family owns Phoon Huat, a large baking supplies business.[12][13] At 15 years old, Ase was living alone and working at a local bar with aspirations to become a model.[14] Around that time, she met Russel Wong, an established Singaporean photographer who also happened to be her neighbour.[15] Russel helped build Ase’s portfolio which landed her a role in the Mediacrop drama series, SPIN (2000) and a modelling contract with the Singaporean agency, Mannequin.[16][17]

Education

Ase dropped out of the conventional schooling route at fifteen years old.[18][19] She was a student at ISS International School in Singapore from 1996 to 1998 where she studied drama and art.[20] She pursued her professional acting training from the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute of New York and Leslie Khan Institute of Los Angeles.[21][22]

Early career - Hong Kong & Thailand

At 18 years old, Ase moved to Hong Kong to pursue a career in show business after seeing some success from SPIN (2000).[23][24][25] Her parents had not provided any financial support.[23] Eventually, Ase signed with Jackie Chan’s management, appearing in Aaron Kwok, Leon Lai and Edison Chen's music videos.[26][27] Ase was briefly a radio presenter from 2001 to 2002 at 98.7FM and manned the segment, ‘The Morning Show’.[28] She was then scouted to act in the Thai horror flick, Sick Nurses (Suay Laak Sai) (2007).[29] The movie was a success and Ase had her breakthrough as an international actress at 26 years old.

Personal life

Previously, Ase had dated the Hong Kong actor Shawn Yue and the Thai rock star Bank Clash (Preeti Barameeanant).[30] Ase and Bank Clash’s relationship ended in June 2019 and the breakup was confirmed in July 2019.[31]

Engagement to Jon Lor (2020)

In 2019, Ase pursued a relationship with American-born Chinese businessman, Jon Lor - the co-founder and managing director of the annual Wonderfruit lifestyle festival in Thailand.[32] The two had met through mutual friends in 2014 but got closer after they moved into the same apartment building in Bangkok in 2018.[33][34] Jon proposed to Ase at the Amanoi resort in Vietnam after six months of dating.[35][36] The couple had plans to register their marriage on 31 March 2020 with a small wedding ceremony in the Maldives. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions that followed, the wedding plans were postponed.[37][38]

Personal advocacy - Social egg freezing

After a fertility check in 2017, Ase discovered that she would have difficulties conceiving naturally due to her low reserve of eggs.[39] At the advice of her doctors, she decided to freeze her eggs at a hospital in Bangkok.[40] Although she had wanted to have the procedure done in Singapore, the law states that egg freezing can only be done for medical reasons - such as for those undergoing chemotherapy.[41][42] Ase spent almost 1,000,000 Thai Baht (approximately S$44,400) to freeze seventeen of her eggs.[43]

Acting career highlights

As of 2020, Ase is represented and managed by Beam Artistes.[44] Ase was selected as the host for the 24th Asian Television Awards in Manila, Philippines.[45][46]
