Adelene Stanley (born 15 July 1995) is a professional Singaporean dancer. At 18 years old, she was the only Singaporean selected for INALA: A Zulu Ballet - an award-winning dance-musical that has also received a Grammy nomination.[1][2][3] As of June 2020, Adelene has close to 3,500 followers on Instagram.

Early life

Adelene was born and raised in Singapore.[4] She started ballet at three years old and pursued it as a hobby before receiving an educational foundation in dance at the School of the Arts (SOTA).[5] In 2013, Adelene suffered a displaced disc in her lower back during a class at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance.[6] Though it affected her flexibility at the time, she recovered from the injury.

Education

Adelene is a classically trained dancer. She joined the School of the Arts in 2008 where she was primarily involved in classical ballet and contemporary dance, with a focus on grand technique.[7] She also dabbled in other dance forms ranging from Flamenco to Tibetan dance.[8] When she turned 16, she received a scholarship from the National Arts Council (NAC) to pursue her training at the Rambert School in London as an overseas dance scholar.[9] In August 2013, Adelene joined the Nederlands Dans Theatre for their summer intensive - a programme meant for student dancers to practice during their school holidays. She was one of the 20 dancers to receive the Summer Intensive Scholarship.[10][11] She graduated from the Rambert School in 2014, performing as the principal dancer for her graduation piece, Rite of Spring.[12]

Dance

As of June 2020, Adelene is a freelance professional dancer based in Singapore. In partnership with local gyms like LEVEL, she started teaching dance and movement therapy in 2019.[13] In an interview with Singapore Tatler, Adelene said:

"This is a class based on dance improvisation, and is designed to unlock the humdrum of daily life; to reconnect the body and mind in a session that allows movement through space."[14]

INALA: A Zulu Ballet - Cast (2014 - 2015, 2019)

Adelene was selected for INALA: A Zulu Ballet during her final year at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in 2014.[15] The production debuted at the Edinburgh International Festival.[16] That same year, the cast performed at the Royal Variety Performance in front of 50 million viewers and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - Prince William and Kate Middleton.[17] Adelene then toured extensively with the cast, performing 58 show dates in the United Kingdom, Edinburgh and Moscow.[18] In 2019, she was a part of the show's Southeast Asian tour.[19] The production premiered in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre in June 2019.

Frontier Danceland - Company artiste (2016 - 2018)

In 2016, Adelene joined Frontier Danceland - a contemporary dance company based in Singapore, as a full-time dancer. In 2016, she instructed a workshop for the Integrated Arts students at her alma mater, SOTA.[20] In 2017, Adelene presented a piece titled Lost World at LEAP 2017, an annual dance showcase featuring graduates from the M1-Frontier Danceland PULSE Programme.[21] In July 2018, she choreographed a piece titled Echo & Shadow for the company's third major production that year, Dancers Locker 2018.[22] She was also involved in LEAP 2018.[23] Adelene left Frontier Danceland later that year after fulfilling the requirements for her NAC bond.[24] Since then, she has still conducted open classes with the company in her capacity as a freelance dancer.[25] Adelene also returned as a project choreographer for LEAP 2019.[26][27]
