Ng Ling Ling (born 1972) is a Singaporean politician and a former public servant at the Ministry of Health (MOH) Office for Healthcare Transformation.[1] In June 2020, she was announced as a People's Action Party candidate and is contesting for Ang Mo Kio GRC.
Background
Before joining the social service sector, Ng Ling Ling worked in banking for five years.[2] She then worked at the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) for over a decade where she was heavily involved in developing the Community Chest (Comchest).[3] In 2018, she was given the tile, "Her World Woman of the Year" for her contributions to the social service industry.[4] She joined the primary healthcare sector in 2018 and stepped down from her positions in 2020 to enter politics.[5][6]
Early life & family
Growing up, Ng Ling Ling lived in a three-room Housing Development Board (HDB) flat with her parents and older sister.[7][8] In a candidate introduction video, she shared that her mother had encouraged her to participate in art competitions at the community centre as a child.[9] As of 2020, Ng Ling Ling is married with one child.
Education
Ng Ling Ling was a student at Raffles Girls' Secondary School and Raffles Junior College.[10] She graduated from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1994 with a degree in accountancy.[11][12]
Post-graduate studies
In 2004, she received her master's degree in public administration from the Australian National University (ANU).[13]
Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Ang Mo Kio GRC)
Ng Ling Ling was introduced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 25 June 2020.[14] On the PAP website, she is quoted to have said:
"It is important for us to take courage to do the things that we care about, for the people we care about, despite challenges, setbacks and sacrifices."[15]
Online allegation
On 29 June 2020, Richard Giam, the founding chief executive of the fund-raising firm, Rainmakerz published a Facebook post stating that Ng Ling Ling had made a "false claim" during her candidate introduction speech.[16] He had taken issue with the following statement:
"I set up the Social Service Training Institute (SSTI) and allocated funds to ensure that social service agencies can run critical programmes."[17]
Ng Ling Ling has since addressed the allegation, clarifying that SSTI had been a "team effort" and that she was a part of the "pioneer team".[18]
