Shawn Huang Wei Zhong (born 1982) is a Singaporean politician and the director for enterprise development at Temasek Holdings. In June 2020, he was announced as People's Action Party candidate for the 2020 General Elections.[1]
Background
Before joining Temasek Holdings, Shawn Huang worked for the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) as an F-16 fighter pilot.[2] He joined the air force at 18 years old.[3] In 2018, Shawn Huang was the National Day Parade Commander.[4] He has volunteered in Taman Jurong Constituency since 2010 where he is also the chairman of the Community Arts and Culture Club.
Early life & family
Shawn Huang was born in 1982 as Ingkiriwang Shawn Wei Zhong.[5] In 1989, his parents changed his name to Huang Wei Zhong Shawn in a deed poll. In a Facebook post dated 28 June 2020, he explained that he was misinformed about the validity of his name when he applied for his National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) at 12 years old. He says:
"I recently looked into the matter again, and confirmed that what I had been told while in primary school was incorrect, and my deed poll name has been valid all along. I therefore decided to henceforth use my legal surname Huang, which was intended by my parents for me."[6]
Shawn Huang was born in Singapore and is a Singapore citizen by birth.[7]
Education
Shawn Huang graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 2006 as a Top Military Graduate. He attained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.[8] In 2015, he was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship and pursued the Tsinghua-MIT Global Master of Business Administration at Tsinghua University.[9]
General Elections 2020
Shawn Huang was introduced to the public as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[10] He is set to contest in the Jurong GRC for the 2020 General Election.[11]
According to the PAP's website, Shawn says that:
"We must give everyone opportunities to do well, contribute to others, and have a meaningful life."[12]
Shawn has been volunteering in Taman Jurong, which is part of Jurong GRC, before he was announced as a candidate.[13]
Online Allegations
Shawn came under fire when rumors of him being rude at the 2018 National Day Parade surfaced. In a now deleted post by Facebook user Lin Leo, she claimed that Shawn Huang took offence at being served the same food as the participants, and showed his displeasure by throwing the food onto a table in front of two servicemen.[14]
Shawn took to Facebook to shed light on this incident. In his post, he mentioned that no lunch was catered for his group then and he had asked the Warrant Officer if he could have a packet of food.[15] The officer declined and Shawn went to find his own lunch. On his return, he found a pack of food placed on his table though he had already eaten.[16] As such, he returned the packet of food.
"I told the WO that I no longer needed the ration and politely passed the ration back."[17]
Shawn also stated that he had attempted to contact the Facebook user but was unable to do so since the post was removed.[18] Lin Leo later made a statement to retract her allegations, and noted that she may have been "too harsh" in her original post.[19]
