Joakim attended Chong Boon Secondary School and has a diploma in theatre from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).[6] He served as a student councillor and student ambassador while studying at Chong Boon Secondary School.[7]

During his National Service, Joakim was in the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company. He hosted formal SAF dinners attended by the Minister of Defence and other foreign dignitaries as well as Recruit’s Evenings events. Joakim was noticed by the NDP committee after he stood in as host for one of the National Education shows and preview shows.[8]

Personal advocacy

Joakim joined several local personalities such as Sonia Chew, Roystan Tan and Andie Chen for the #LifeBeyondGrades campaign in 2018. The Instagram campaign reminds students and parents that future success is not solely determined by grades on a report card.[9]

Personal life

Joakim is of Korean-Indian descent, with a Korean mother and Indian father.

Joakim enjoys running and has taken part in marathons like the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and the Army Half Marathon. He is a fan of the brand adidas and had hosted events for them.[10] Joakim is also a long-time fan of Manchester United Football Club.[11]

In a 2012 interview with The New Paper, Joakim shared that his most special spot in Singapore is the Esplanade outdoor stage facing the Singapore River. At the time, it was reportedly his favourite quiet spot for 10 years.[12]

Radio (2014 - Present day)

Between January 2014 and January 2015, Joakim was the presenter for a newly launched morning show called 'The Wake Up Call' on 987FM alongside Sonia Chew.[13] From February 2015 to January 2017, Joakim was paired with Gerald Koh for a new evening show called 'The Bro Code' as part of an overhaul in radio shows across the Mediacorp radio stations.[14]

Joakim also hosted '987 Home on Saturdays', a weekend segment featuring music by local artists. From January 2017 onwards, Joakim is partnered with Sonia Chew for 'The Shock Circuit with Sonia and Joakim'.

Singapore Idol Season 2 (2006)

Joakim competed in the second season of Singapore Idol at 17 years old. Joakim made it to the Top 5, despite the criticism over his vocals.[15]

After Singapore Idol, Joakim landed a one-year contract with MediaCorp to star in the second episode of 'Lifeline', alongside Gurmit Singh[16] and Okto's youth drama series 'The Band'.[17] Joakim joined Mediacorp after completing his National Service.
