Flourish Bakehouse was a Singaporean artisanal café and bakery brand founded in October 2021 by entrepreneur-baker Diane Ong. The venture combined specialty coffee, savoury and sweet bakes, and a relaxed, pet-friendly café environment.

Founding and concept

Diane Ong, a former auditor with a passion for baking, launched Flourish Bakehouse in October 2021 at Phoenix Park, 318 Tanglin Road, Singapore.[1] The café was designed with a lawn-style outdoor space and picnic-friendly atmosphere, where patrons (including families and pet-owners) could picnic on mats and enjoy artisanal bakes.[2]

The brand’s name “Flourish” reflected its goal of crafting a welcoming space to encourage community, comfort and celebration through food. In its early menu, it offered grilled cheese toasties, savoury quiches and pastries like raspberry-pistachio friands and lemon polenta cake.[2]

Locations and menu

Phoenix Park (Tanglin): At its first location, Flourish Bakehouse occupied the colonial-style Block A of Phoenix Park, offering indoor seating (non-air-conditioned) and an alfresco lawn. The café was described as “pet-friendly” and equipped with picnic mats for customers.[2] Signature items at this stage included ham-leek-parmesan scones, cheddar-corn muffins, and grilled cheese toasties served with soup.[3]

Relocation to SMU (Stamford Road): After the Tanglin lease expired in December 2022, the café took a hiatus and reopened in September 2023 at #01-22A Li Ka Shing Library, 70 Stamford Road (Campus Green, Singapore Management University) with indoor seating and an outdoor lawn overlooking the campus green.[4] The menu evolved to feature items such as the “Berry Bomb” tart (a frangipane tart filled with berries), XXL brown-butter chocolate-chip cookies, and upgraded toasties.[3]

Challenges and closure

Despite garnering a loyal following, Flourish Bakehouse encountered steep operational challenges. Diane Ong cited personal reasons—including a miscarriage in 2024 and health issues (hand-eczema) triggered by frequent dish-washing—as major factors in reconsidering full-time café operations.[2] External business pressures such as rising costs, higher rent and staffing shortages added strain. For example, the Phoenix Park outlet’s closing announcement in December 2022 noted that short-term lease renewal was among key issues.[5]

On 14 September 2025, Diane announced the permanent closure of the café’s SMU location, marking the end of Flourish Bakehouse’s physical premises.[1]

Legacy and impact

Flourish Bakehouse is remembered for its fresh-take on the café-bakery concept in Singapore—combining community, pets-friendly environment, minimalist design and elevated bakes. Reviewers highlighted its unique vibe: a lawn-side picnic experience, a relaxed brunch spot with quality pastries.[6] The brand’s closure in 2025 was also noted in media as part of a broader discussion on the challenges faced by independent F&B businesses in Singapore.[1]
