Controversy with Lau Pa Sat first-date comment
On 1 September 2025, Naomi sparked public discussion after she rejected a first-date suggestion to meet at Lau Pa Sat, calling it “plain rude” in an Instagram Story. She stated: “Anyone who invites me to Lau Pa Sat is getting cancelled, it’s just plain rude lol. I don’t care how handsome you are.”[4]
This remark went viral, prompting her to clarify that it was not about money, but about dating standards, pointing out hawker centres’ heat, crowding, and noise as impractical for first dates. She emphasised that she respects hawker culture and has had "simple coffee dates" before.[4]
Despite backlash, Naomi doubled down on her stance and announced she had launched a line of T-shirts—available for pre-order—with phrases like “I don’t do first dates at Lau Pa Sat” printed on them. She described the public reaction as a national debate over her dating standards, and mentioned that many women approached her privately to express solidarity.[5]
