Following that, she went on to obtain her Postgraduate Diploma in Education, English, Mathematics, and Science in 2004 from the National Institute of Education’s (NIE) Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning. She was also trained to teach high ability students by the Gifted Education Branch in the Ministry of Education.[5]
In 2016, she pursued her Masters in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, where she completed the course in 2019.[4]

She was also seconded to the corporate taxation department in KPMG Singapore. After that stint, she then joined Deloitte & Touche LLP and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) as an intern prior to furthering her studies.
During her time at NIE in 2003, Carean was attached to Zheng Hua Primary School as a trainee teacher.[6] She graduated with distinctions at NIE and went on to become a level representative in the English Department, followed by the Subject Head of Information Communications & Technology and the Head of Department of Science at Kranji Primary School. During her time at MOE, she won several awards, coordinated and consulted on multiple projects, and assisted with the mentorship of trainee teachers.
In 2008, Carean coordinated action research projects for cluster schools and presented her findings to the cluster teachers on how pupils in Kranji Primary School perceived an online learning environment.[7] The same year, she was mentioned for her dedication and professionalism as a role model for teachers by Director-General of Education Seah Jiak Cho’s Teacher’s Day address.[8]
She was a Speech and Drama teacher and collaborated with Theatreworks and Act 3 International to train her students in characterisation, voice projection, puppetry, stage directing, scripting, stage make up and sound effects.[6] She led cluster school events and immersion programmes like the Zhuhai Yung Wing School Teacher & Pupil Immersion Programme. As an MOE teacher, Carean was a PSLE Oral examiner and participated in the marking of English language and Science PSLE exam papers.
Carean was also appointed to help correct student behaviour and handle disciplinary issues during this period and contributed to the Student Affairs and Pupil Development Department.[9] She held a leadership position in the Ministry of Education for 6 years before moving on to pursue educational consultancy and writing.[6]
