Mariam Jaafar (Singapore Politician)

Mariam Jaafar (born 1977) is the Singapore managing director and partner for the Boston Consulting Group. In June 2020, she was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections.[1] She is a part of the Sembawang GRC team headed by Minister of Education, Ong Ye Kung.[2]

Background

Before joining the Boston Consulting Group in 2006, Mariam Jaafar was the chief of staff and chief operating officer of Barclays Wealth Management Asia, Middle East, and Africa. She had also worked at Vertex Management.[3] She is also a GOVTECH Singapore board member.[4]

Early life & family

Mariam Jaafar was born in 1977 to a father who worked as a Malay teacher and a mother who was a nurse. On top of his full-time job, her father worked as a translator to supplement the family's income.[5][6]

Education

Mariam Jaafar received the MENDAKI scholarship award in 1990.[7] She was a student at Raffles Girls Secondary School[8] and subsequently, Raffles Junior College. Mariam Jaafar furthered her studies at Stanford University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.[9]

Post-graduate studies

Mariam Jaafar also holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.[10] In 2004, she pursued a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.[11]

Grassroots involvement

Mariam Jaafar has experience doing grassroots outreach with the People's Action Party (PAP). MP Amrin Amin introduced Mariam Jaafar as a "newcomer to Woodlands" in a Facebook post published on 31 March 2020.[12] As of 2020, she is vice-chairman of the Woodlands Community Club management committee.[13]

Mariam Jaafar was officially announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[14] On the PAP website, she is quoted to have said:

"My belief has always been, and it will always be, that it’s all about the people. My education has given me everything in life, so I would really like to give back. To be given the opportunity to try and help a lot of people would be the biggest honour I could possibly imagine."[15]
