Sharael Taha (born 1981) is a Singaporean politician and the vice president of Singapore Aero Engine Services (SAES).[1] In June 2020, he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 Singapore General Elections and is contesting in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.[2]

Background

Sharael Taha is an engineer by training.[3] Before joining SAES in late 2018, he worked at Keppel Shipyard and subsequently, Rolls Royce. As a programme executive at Rolls Royce, he was based in the United Kingdom for some time.[4] In a 2020 candidate video uploaded by the PAP, Sharael Taha stated that he "builds jet engines for a living".[5]

Early life & family

Sharael Taha grew up in Pasir Ris.[6] He served his National Service (NS) as a vehicle mechanic.[7] As of 2020, he is married with three children.[8]

Education

Sharael Taha was a student at Victoria School. He then enrolled in the National University of Singapore (NUS) where he was heavily involved in sports such as sepak takraw, football, hockey, softball and touch rugby. He represented Kent Ridge Hall in these sports. Sharael Taha graduated from NUS in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering while also receiving the outstanding student achievement award.[9]

Postgraduate studies

He furthered his studies at the University of Oxford - Said Business School and received his Master's of Business Administration in 2013.[10]

NUS Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE)

As an engineering student in NUS, Sharael Taha designed and built an award-winning open wheeled race-car for the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) competition in the United States of America.[11][12] Following his graduation, he continued to work with the Department of Engineering as a research engineer and project supervisor.[13][14]

People's Action Party - Grassroots involvement

Sharael Taha has done youth community outreach in Bukit Batok East, sharing about his experience in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry.[15] In 2020, he was seen walking the ground with Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

Politics

General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC)

Sharael Taha was introduced as People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[16] In his candidate introductory video, Sharael Taha shares more about his vision for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC if he were to be elected. He says:

"I would like to work with the residents to make Pasir Ris-Punggol the best place to live in."[17]
