Eliciting strong reactions of indignation and disapproval from netizens after an episode on the topic of cheating (2022)
On 8 November 2022, Clarity published a 36-minute episode on various streaming platforms, which was largely centred around topics like cheating and monogamous relationships.[12]
However, the episode was heavily criticised online as the hosts were seen to suggest that the act of cheating is justifiable. When 987FM DJ Germaine Tan asked whether it was “acceptable or justifiable”, her fellow hosts replied saying that “there are situations” or “reasons” that might make it justifiable.[12]
Later on, excerpts of the episode were taken down on TikTok as it took most of the heat.[12] The podcast’s producers also came out to clarify the content had been “misinterpreted due to lack of context” and that they were “not justifying that cheating or having an affair is okay”.[12]
“Well, I don't want to put a hard "no" to this question. In certain cases where relationships are toxic and people cheat, then I think... in a certain way, it's justifiable? Because you can't get love from that relationship, and that's why you turn to other means.” - Hazelle Teo’s perspective and take on the cheating debate.[12]

Newsworthy incidents
Engagement to James Wong
On 6 June 2025, Hazelle announced her engagement to James Wong, a 24-year-old pianist and content creator based in Singapore. The announcement was made through a joint Instagram post where the couple shared the news with their followers, marking the first time they had publicly revealed their relationship.[24]
How they met
Hazelle and James first connected in 2024 when Wong appeared on Hazelle's Instagram explore page.[25] Impressed by his piano skills and intrigued by his charm, Hazelle made the first move in their relationship, a dynamic she described as "not the typical 'guy chasing after a girl'."[25]
She explained: "When we first got to know each other, I was the one that went after him. It happened back in 2024 when he appeared on my Instagram explore page and I decided to reach out to him to see if he wanted to collaborate. I thought 'Hey, this guy is pretty cute. He plays the piano. Let me reach out to him to do a Taylor Swift song [where] I would sing and he would play the piano. To my surprise, he agreed.'"[25]
The collaboration featured Wong on the piano while Teo sang a mash-up of Taylor Swift's hits "Love Story" (2008) and "Enchanted" (2010).[26]
Hazelle used the work collaboration as an opportunity to ask for James’ handle on messaging platform Telegram, so they could communicate more easily.[25] However, initial attempts at personal conversation were challenging, as James only replied to work-related messages and ignored personal topics.[27]
When James did respond to personal messages, he would reply after approximately 14 hours with responses like "haha" or "okay" that made it difficult for Hazelle to continue the conversation.[27]
The turning point in their relationship came when Hazelle asked James out for supper one day. They spoke for three solid hours that night, covering many topics. After that evening, James became more responsive on Telegram and the dynamics between them shifted significantly.[27]
The couple met each other's parents within three months of dating.[27] Hazelle's parents developed a strong fondness for James, praising his politeness and kindness, and noting how well he treats both Hazelle's parents and his own parents.[27]
Before their engagement announcement, the couple had one public moment at Hong Kong singer-songwriter GEM's (鄧紫棋) concert in March 2025.[28] During the concert's kiss cam segment, their faces were captured on the big screen in front of approximately 50,000 people.[28]
James later recounted the moment on TikTok: "I immediately leaned toward Hazelle and jokingly asked, 'What do we do if the camera points at us?' Hazelle, with the most unconcerned look, said, 'Nah, that's not gonna happ—' when I looked up and saw our faces plastered on the big screen. Our minds went completely blank. We just prayed the cameraman would turn the camera away, and thankfully, he did. (We didn't kiss, haha!)"[28]
Immediately after their appearance, their phones "blew up with notifications from friends and family saying they had seen us on the kiss cam," including a text from Teo's boss.[28]
The proposal
The surprise proposal took place in Qingdao, China, during the final night of Hazelle's week-long work trip.[24] According to her account, she had returned to her hotel at 1AM, expecting just a few hours of rest before catching a 6am flight back to Singapore.[25]
While at the hotel lobby, a staff member from travel company Chan Brothers approached Hazelle, telling her that the hotel was offering a room upgrade after recognising her as a radio DJ. She was told all she needed to do was go to the room, film a video, and tag the hotel on Instagram to redeem it.[25] Hazelle was initially hesitant due to the late hour and her exhaustion, but decided to proceed with her co-host, Qijia, not realising that Qijia was helping James orchestrate the surprise.[25]
Hazelle described the moment:[25]
"When I went into the room, I saw this videographer standing inside with a camera facing towards me but it still didn't occur to me that it was a proposal. I thought the hotel had sent someone to be in the room to film DJs' reactions as we entered the room to use as part of the marketing. So I was angry. I thought 'How can this hotel invade my privacy?' But when the room door opened up even more, I saw this soft orange glow from the inside. There were flower petals, there were candles, and I saw this oddly familiar person standing there, and that was James. At that point in time, I was lost for words."
The room was decorated with soft orange lighting, white roses, candles, and a heart-shaped cake bearing the words "Marry me."[29] Hazelle shared in her Instagram caption that she "arrived at the hotel at 1AM., looking like a mess and ready to rest before my 6AM flight. But when I opened the door, I was met with flowers, lighting, someone holding a camera, and then my then-boyfriend standing there nervously."[29]
James had meticulously planned every detail of the proposal. He had secretly coordinated with Teo's workplace to extend her leave, allowing them more time to celebrate this life-changing moment.[29] James had even packed Hazelle's spare clothes in his luggage in preparation for the extended stay.[29] Hazelle wrote on Instagram: "He planned it all quietly, sweetly, thoughtfully and it turned out to be even more beautiful than I ever imagined."[29]
The day after the proposal, Hazelle, James, and co-host Wei Jie visited popular spots around Qingdao for a photo shoot. After Wei Jie returned home, Hazelle and James hired a makeup team and photographer from China to capture more pictures.[27] Hazelle purchased a dress from a night market in Qingdao for the spontaneous engagement shoot.[27]
The age gap discussion
The couple's six-year age gap, with Hazelle being the older partner, became a topic of public discussion following their engagement announcement.[30] In February 2026, speaking on their podcast "The Couples Classroom," Teo (then 32) and Wong (then 26) addressed the age difference and public reactions to their relationship.[30]
Hazelle shared that it was "refreshing" to be in a relationship where the woman is older than the man, as society often expects the opposite dynamic.[30] She explained:[30]
"Society always tells you, women tend to be emotionally more mature than men by two years, so it's always better to get someone who is older than you, and then this man can take care of you, like mentally, financially, and physically as well. But yeah, in all honesty, I feel like age is just a number."
Hazelle admitted she had always dated older men in the past, so she never considered that a relationship with a younger man could work for her.[27]
James shared that when he first started dating Teo at 24, he felt he needed to grow up "mentally" so they could talk about "mature stuff" like life, work, career, and starting a family.[30] However, he ultimately concluded that the six-year age gap is "just a number."[30]
Hazelle added that another significant reason the pair worked well together was that James went straight into the workforce after polytechnic, which helped them relate well to each other despite the age difference.[30]
Following their engagement announcement, which was the first time the pair had made their relationship public, Hazelle and James received various comments on social media.[30] Hazelle shared that some comments speculated that she was pregnant or that their relationship would not work out because she was six years older than he was.[30]
Addressing these comments, Hazelle said that more goes on behind the scenes than is shared on Instagram:[30]
"We hope to you know, just give more strength and more love to people out there who are also experiencing, like, a huge age gap, and if you're feeling uncertain about your relationship, we're here to tell you that age is just a number."
