Early life and background

Alfy Ngor is from Singapore.[3] He adopted the stage name ‘WUKONG’, inspired by the legendary Monkey King (Sun Wukong) of Chinese mythology. He has described his artistic identity as reflecting the "warrior spirit" of that mythic figure and using that as a lens for his high-energy performances.[2]

In his youth, Ngor encountered legal troubles: according to an interview, he was sentenced in 2020 to 21 months in prison for “causing grievous hurt with weapons” and also received corporal punishment (three strokes of the cane). He served about 14 months before his release in August 2021. He has publicly spoken about the experience as a period of reflection and transformation.[2]

Career and musical style

After his release, Ngor adopted the stage name ‘WUKONG’ and embarked on a career blending electronic dance music with traditional Asian sounds, a genre he terms "Oriental Rave." His music incorporates elements from Chinese mythology and traditional instruments, aiming to create a unique auditory experience that bridges cultural heritage and modern beats.

WUKONG's debut EP, The Almighty, was released in January 2019 under Rude Mood Records. The EP received positive feedback for its innovative blend of genres such as psytrance, hardstyle, jersey club, and trap with ethnic and oriental sounds.[4]

In 2022, he signed with Liquid State, a label co-founded by Alan Walker and R3HAB, becoming the first Asian artist to collaborate with them. That same year, he released the track Legend of Wong Fei Hung: Rebirth, which gained significant attention and showcased his signature style.[3]

WUKONG's performances include notable appearances at major festivals and venues. In December 2022, he performed at ZoukOut 2022, one of Asia's largest electronic music festivals, sharing the stage with international artists like Tiësto and Zedd. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, describing it as a "golden ticket" moment in his career.[2]

In 2024, he was ranked #87 in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs list, marking a significant milestone in his career. His collaborations that year included tracks like I Believe with Bassjackers, Let Me Go with Ben Nicky, and Heart For Rent with Nurko.[1]

Artistic persona

WUKONG’s creative identity is deeply rooted in Asian cultural motifs and personal transformation. His stage name references the Monkey King myth as a symbol of resilience and rebellion.[2] He states that his time in prison allowed him to conceptualise musical ideas—he claims to have created tracks in his head during solitary confinement, which later became actual releases.[2] His sound merges aggressive, high-energy techno/EDM with references to Asian mythology, instrumentation, and a visual aesthetic of mysticism and rave culture.[1]
