Disco Hue
Disco Hue is a Singaporean band comprising of the following members — keyboardist and producer Auzaie Zie (also known as ‘Thievves’), drummer Billy Chua (also known as ‘fireeweed’), main vocalist Sherlyn Leo and guitarist Rush Ang.[1][2][3] The band releases Synth-pop hits that are reminiscent of discotheque & boogie music and new jack swing.[4] In 2018, Warner Music Singapore signed Disco Hue. As of October 2019, the band has an average of 35,000 monthly Spotify listeners including listeners from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Outside of Disco Hue, Auzaie Zie (Thievves) and Billy Chua (fireeweed) are members of other bands. Auzaie is a part of 'brb.' and Billy is a part of 'Supersect'.[5][6] Auzaie Zie directs music videos for Disco Hue and helms the video production house, Thievves Production. Auzaie has produced music videos for other Singaporean acts like Jasmine Sokko.[7][8][9]
Background
The band’s name was inspired by established bands such as Panic! At The Disco, Ella Riot (formerly known as My Dear Disco) and Jamiroquai. The word ‘hue’ reflects the band’s versatility to traverse upon different music genres.[10][11]
Origins
Disco Hue began as a passion project in 2012. The band had the intention to fill a gap in the local music scene at the time.[12] The initial band members were Auzaie Zie, Billy Chua, Christina Lye (former Main Vocalist), Rush Ang and Stasha Wong (former Bassist). The five of them were all former students pursuing a diploma in Music and Audio Technology (DMAT) at Singapore Polytechnic.[13][14][15]
Auzaie first encountered Billy at a faculty camp where he was Billy’s group leader. Rush joined the band later on after getting to know Billy as coursemates.[16] Throughout their time in Singapore Polytechnic, the band performed at various gigs and participated in competitions including Thunder Band Slam where they were 2nd runners-up.[17][18]
In 2013, Disco Hue went on a temporary hiatus due to clashing commitments such as National Service (NS) and internships.[19] At the same time, both Christina and Stasha had left the band. In 2014, Sherlyn joined Disco Hue as the new main vocalist. Auzaie had stumbled upon Sherlyn on the phone application, Vine. At the time, Sherlyn had been posting six-second-long song covers on the app. From there, Auzaie invited Sherlyn to join the band.[20][21][22]
Visual aesthetic
Disco Hue maintains a coherent visual aesthetic which complements the band’s genre and music style. The band’s aesthetic can be seen in their album art, dressing and music videos.
For example, the music video for ‘Can’t Be Mine’ (YouTube video) features television workout programs from the 1980s, brightly coloured backdrops and retro props that are synonymous with the Vaporwave aesthetic.[23][24][25]
Career highlights
Disco Hue’s rise to public acclaim can be traced back to 2016. Their first and second singles — ‘Gotta Find You’ and ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ respectively were well received. Both singles garnered a total of over 160,000 views on YouTube and close to 1,000,000 streams on Spotify as of October 2019.[26] The release of the band’s single, ‘Plastic Hearts’ in 2017 drove the band further into the limelight. In mid-2018, Disco Hue was signed to the major record label, Warner Music Singapore. They are managed by Lennat Mak, who oversees other local artistes including Jasmine Sokko and Ffion.[27][28] To date, Disco Hue released their first LP album, ‘The Yearbook’ in late June 2019.
