Jasmine Sokko (Jasmine Wong Chu Qing) is a Singaporean electronic music artist, known for wearing a signature visor or mask during public appearances. She rose to fame with the release of her hit debut single ‘1057’ which had broken into Spotify’s Local Top 50 Viral Chart. Her participation in Rave Now - a Chinese electronic music competition - has allowed her to gain traction in Asia. She has also been the opening act for The Chainsmokers, MØ and Lauv. Jasmine Sokko was awarded the Best Southeast Asia Act a the MTV EMAs in November 2019.

Music genre

Jasmine Sokko first dabbled in music when she saved up for a guitar in primary school.[1] Subsequently, she joined several rock bands. After realising that her voice was unsuitable for the rock genre, she turned to electronic music.[2][3] Jasmine got into songwriting when she joined the National Arts Council’s NOISE Singapore Mentorship during her ‘A’ Levels. In a 2016 interview, Jasmine named Canadian artist Grimes and Australian artist Flume as her musical inspirations.[4]


In university, Jasmine was a member of SMU Stereometa, the campus’ DJ club.[5]

Mask

Jasmine’s practise of wearing a mask started when filming the music video for her song '1057'.[6] The music video was published on YouTube on 23 September 2016.[7] Since then, it has become a part of her artist persona.

‘Hurt’ was Jasmine’s major-label debut under Warner Music Singapore.[9]

Collaborations

‘Driven (1997)’ was a collaboration between Jasmine Sokko and fellow Singaporean artist Amanda Ling. Released as part of ‘The Great Singapore Replay’, the song was a rendition of Concave Scream’s 1997 song ‘Driven’.[10]

Jasmine Sokko finished 4th place in the Chinese electronic music competition ‘Rave Now’.[11] She was the only Singaporean and female producer to make it to the finals.[12] Jasmine’s performance of her hit single ‘1057’ garnered over a million views on Rave Now’s official Weibo page.[13] Jasmine shared that the competition exposed her to how electronic music can be meaningful and poetic, contrary to popular belief.[14]
