Kouk Leong Jin
Kouk Leong Jin was a 28-year-old Singaporean fourth-year medical student at Duke-NUS Medical School. Prior to his disappearance, he was due to present a paper at a medical conference in Athens, Greece.[1][2]
Background
He was 28 years old in 2011, when he went missing in September which places his year of birth around 1983. His wife, Seow Shu Ping, whom he had married just two weeks before his departure to Greece and his family were involved in search efforts in Athens following his disappearance.[1]
He is reported to have served National Service in Singapore (sources mention he had “served in the Navy”) and also was a member of the NUS Taekwondo Team.[3][4]
Circumstances of disappearance
On 27 September 2011, Kouk failed to appear at the conference where he was scheduled to present. He was reported missing after leaving a single missed call to a friend whom he was supposed to meet. There were reports of him having last been in Athens. Despite intensive search efforts, no confirmed sightings have been made since.[1][2]
His disappearance spurred widespread media attention in both Singapore and Greece. His family, friends, and the Duke-NUS community were involved in a concerted search, and the Dean of the medical school, Ranga Krishnan, issued public statements appealing for information.[2]
Search and investigation
The Dean’s public messages made clear that as of 10 October 2011, ten days after Kouk’s disappearance, the search was ongoing with no confirmed results. The university community, along with his family and friends, continued to await news.[2]
Various reported but unverified sightings in Athens and elsewhere were periodically circulated; however, none were substantiated, and Kouk Leong Jin remains missing to this day.[1]
Kouk’s case remains an unresolved missing-persons case with significant emotional impact for those close to him and within the local medical and student communities. While nearly 14 years have passed since his disappearance, the case remains open without closure.
