Desmond Tan Kok Ming (born 1970) was the Chief Executive Director at People's Association (PA).[1] In June 2020, he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections and is contesting in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.[2]
Background
Desmond Tan joined the People's Association in 2017 and stepped down in early June 2020.[3] He previously worked with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for 28 years,[4] having held numerous appointments in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and SAF.[5]
Early life & family
Desmond Tan was born in 1970 to a father who worked as a taxi driver and mother who was an odd-job worker.[6] He has three siblings and grew up in a three-room flat in Bukit Ho Swee.[7] As of 2020, he is married with three children.[8]
Education
Desmond Tan was a student at Queenstown Secondary Technical School before joining Raffles Junior College. He furthered his studies at Victoria University of Manchester with the support of the Singapore Armed Forces Merit Scholarship.[9] Desmond Tan graduated in 1994 with a first-class honours degree in aeronautical engineering.
Post-graduate studies
In 2000, Desmond Tan received a masters degree in Defence Strategic Studies from Kings College London.[10] Eight years later, he attained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Nanyang Technological University (NTU).[11]
Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC)
Desmond Tan was introduced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 24 June 2020. On the PAP website, he is quoted to have said:
"Never leave the left-overs for our family."[12]
