Background

Education

Tyen Rasif went to CHIJ Toa Payoh (Primary) before pursuing Theatre Studies in School of the Arts (SOTA) for six years. While in primary and secondary school, Tyen thought she would be a lawyer like her mother and father. However, she also wanted to become an actress. Tyen decided against pursuing a university education in drama overseas and was accepted into Yale-NUS College in 2014. She dropped out of Yale-NUS soon after.[1]

During her gap year, Tyen became a certified personal trainer.[2] Inspired by the show 'Shark Tank', Tyen re-entered university, pursuing a degree in Business Management from Singapore Management University (SMU) with a major in Marketing.[3]

Personal life

Early life

Tyen Rasif was born to Joyce Fong and David Rasif on 23 November 1995. She is of Dutch, Javanese and Chinese descent.[22]

Tyen’s biological father, David Rasif, is an ex-lawyer and a fugitive wanted by Singapore. In 2006, he had absconded with S$11.3 million of his client’s money and managed to escape Singapore. He is still currently wanted by Singapore for this issue.[23] Since then, the family has not had any contact with him.

In a 2018 interview with Today, Tyen shared that her mental and physical health worsened when her father, the rogue lawyer David Rasif, left her family when she was 11 years old.[24] Tyen was single-handedly raised by her biological mother, Joyce Fong.[25] At 18 years old, Tyen moved out from her home to live with her then-boyfriend Vishaal after getting into a fight with her mother. The fight stemmed from Tyen’s decision to drop out of Yale-NUS to pursue a gap year.[26] Tyen reconciled with her mother following her break up with Vishaal in 2015. [27]
