Charmian Tan is a Singaporean radio presenter at 987FM alongside colleagues like Joakim Gomez and Sonia Chew. As of 2019, she hosts the weekday show ‘Hot 20 Countdown’ from 8 PM to 12 AM.[1][2] When she was an intern at 987FM, Charmian co-hosted radio shows alongside Kimberly Wang and Gerald Koh.[3][4] In 2014, Charmian was the first runner-up in 987FM’s ‘Radio Star’ competition, which propelled her into a full-time radio career.[5][6] On top of being a radio show host, Charmian has experience in television hosting and acting. In 2018, she co-starred in a Chinese film titled: 'The Big Day (简单的婚礼)'.[7]
Background
Charmian Tan attended Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School.[8] In 2013, she graduated from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) with a Diploma in Media Communications. During her time at SP, she was the pioneer Programme Director for the campus radio station ‘SPACE’ for one and a half years.[9]
Charmian pursued a degree in Communication Studies at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). She graduated from university in 2017.[10] In university, she was involved in ‘Paparazzi’ — a student-run theatre production house. In 2014, she played the role of ‘Mrs. Bonniface’ in ‘The Beaux Stratagem’.[11][12][13] In 2019, Charmian completed a Summer Intensive program at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.[14][15]
During her university days, Charmian interned at 987FM where she was a part of the radio shows ‘The Pantry Dash’ and ‘Hotdogs and a Bun’.
Personal life
Born as Tan Yu Xuan Charmian on 29 June 1993, Charmian Tan is the elder of two siblings.[16][17] She has a younger brother named Cleon Tan and her mother is Cathy Chng.[18]
Charmian Tan is a fan of the American singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift.[19] As part of her university module, Charmian created a Youtube video titled "How To Be Like Taylor Swift".[20] In a 2017 interview with 8 Days, Charmian mentioned that watching ‘The Lizzie McGuire Movie' as a young girl inspired her to follow her ambitions.[21]
Personal advocacy
After Words
As part of her final year university project, Charmian was involved in a social campaign titled ‘After Words’ in 2016. The project started a dialogue around the verbally aggressive behaviour observed among Singaporean couples. The campaign spanned a total of nine months and comprised of a social experiment, an experiential pop-up and an online video series featuring dialogues between couples.[22][23][24]
