Desmond Tan Kok Ming (born 1970) was the Chief Executive Director at People's Association (PA).[1] In June 2020, he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections.[2]
Background
Desmond Tan joined the People's Association in 2017 and stepped down in early June 2020.[3] He previously worked with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) since graduating from university, having held numerous appointments in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and SAF.[4]
Early life & family
Desmond Tan was born in 1970 to a father who worked as a taxi driver and mother who was an odd-job worker.[5] He has three siblings and grew up in a three-room flat in Bukit Ho Swee.[6]
Education
Desmond Tan was a student at Queenstown Secondary Technical School before joining Raffles Junior College. He furthered his studies at Victoria University of Manchester with the support of the Singapore Armed Forces Merit Scholarship.[7] Desmond Tan graduated in 1994 with a first-class honours degree in aeronautical engineering. In 2000, Desmond Tan received a masters degree in Defence Strategic Studies from Kings College London.[8] Eight years later, he attained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Nanyang Technological University (NTU).[9]
