Tay Ying entered show business in 2017 and was reportedly managed by Starlist Agency in 2018.[3] As of August 2020, she has over 60,000 followers on Instagram and over 9,000 followers on TikTok.
Background
Early life & family
Tay Ying is the daughter of the veteran Singaporean actor, Zheng Geping and the actress, Hong Hui Fang.[4] As a result of having well-known parents, she was often bullied in the early years of her education. She spoke about her experience in an interview with 8 Days Magazine:
“I was bullied throughout my primary school years. I went to an all girls school and I think the people there tend to be more bitchy. They would call me names and exclude me from their cliques. I was really shy and weak. It was only in secondary school that I learnt to stand up for myself.”[5]
She has a brother, Calvert Tay (born in 2000) who is also in the acting industry.[6]
Education
Tay Ying is an alumna of Temasek Polytechnic.[7][8] She studied in the School of Business from 2014 to 2017 and graduated with a diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management.[9] Tay Ying furthered her studies at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), where she graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Business (Marketing) in 2019.[10]
Personal life
Relationships
As of 2020, Tay Ying is single.[11] She is close friends with fellow actresses Julie Tan and Chen Yixin, both of whom she grew up with.[12][13] Tay Ying and Chen Yixin also travelled to Shanghai together for their three-month acting course in Motown; an entertainment training school based in Shanghai, China.[14]
Lifestyle
Well-known for her svelte built due to her height and her slim body, Tay Ying has reportedly been mistaken as her father's (Zheng Geping) mistress when out in public.[15][16] When asked how she maintains her toned figure in a Q&A (Question & Answer) video, Tay Ying mentioned:
“I exercise quite regularly, I dance and I go for spin (classes), I do HIIT (high-intensity interval training), I run as well. So literally almost every other day I’m exercising.”[17]
Acting
In 2016, Tay Ying said that she rejected acting offers as she was “very shy” and also because she wanted to focus on her studies.[18][19] At the time, she was still completing her studies in polytechnic.[20] In July 2017, it was reported that Tay Ying had decided to enter show business.[21] She was said to have signed to 3X Media Production, a local artist management company.[22] The following is a timeline of Tay Ying's acting and hosting experience over the years.
Year | Channel | Title | Character | Role | Refs. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2019 | Channel 8, meWATCH | The Good Fight | Elaine | Lead | [23][24] |
2018 | YouTube (tvN Asia) | Get It Beauty On The Road | Herself | Co-host | [25] |
Channel 5, meWATCH | Missing | Joanna | Supporting | [26][27] | |
2017 | Channel 8, meWATCH | While We Are Young | Model | [28] |
On-screen debut (2017) - Channel 8
In 2017, Tay Ying made her on-screen debut in While We Are Young, a Chinese drama. She acted as a model who was trying out for the modelling agency along with one of the main characters.[29]
Missing (2018) - Channel 5
In February 2018, Tay Ying made her English acting debut in Missing, a Channel 5 television show starring the veteran actors Pierre Png and Rebecca Lim.[30] Tay Ying played "Joanna", a teenager who had gone missing.[31]
Get It Beauty On The Road (2018) - Web series
In May 2018, Tay Ying, together with the K-POP singer, Sandara Park and Singaporean actress Chantalle Ng, co-hosted Get It Beauty On The Road.[32] It was Tay Ying’s first time hosting a show.[33] Get It Beauty On The Road was a web series dedicated to informing viewers about Korean beauty products.[34]
Motown Acting School - Shanghai, China
In 2018, Tay Ying auditioned for a place in a three-month acting course at Motown, an entertainment academy in Shanghai, China. She excelled at the free performance section of the audition, coming in seventh out of 700 participants for her dance and martial arts piece.[35]
She was accepted into the academy and moved to Shanghai in June 2019 to begin her training.[36] When asked about her time at the academy, she was quoted to have said the following:
“I’ve actually learnt more than what I expected to. The auditions in Singapore and China are very different. In China, you really have to do your best and showcase everything you’ve got. It’s so formal that it’s almost like The Voice, where there is a panel of judges scrutinising your every move.”[37]
The Good Fight (2019) - Channel 8
In November 2019, Tay Ying was one of the lead actresses in The Good Fight, a Channel 8 martial arts show, where her father was also an executive producer.[38] This was her first major role in a Chinese drama. She played Elaine, a martial arts student who develops feelings for her instructor.[39]

Besides Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, Tay Ying also has a YouTube channel where she posts videos such as travel vlogs and question and answers (Q&A) about herself. She co-manages another channel with her brother, Calvert. Tay Ying has also appeared as a brand ambassador for Shiseido Professional[40][41] and PUMA.[42]
