Abdul Shariff Bin Aboo Kassim (born 1966) is a Singaporean politician and a former researcher and project coordinator.[1][2] In June 2020, he was announced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections and contested in East Coast GRC.[3][4][5]
Background
Abdul Shariff took a break from his studies during his last year of secondary school to enter the workforce as a factory worker.[6] His varied experience includes working as a market shop assistant, security guard, dispatch rider and undertaker.[7] He has also worked as a technical support officer at the Ministry of Law.[8] While studying at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he worked as a NightRider bus driver and relief taxi driver to pay his expenses.[9] He entered the engineering industry after receiving his diploma.[10] To enter politics in 2020, Abdul Shariff had to resign from his position as a researcher and project coordinator as his employer has a “policy of non-partisanship”.[11] As of July 2020, he is married with two children.[12]
Education
Abdul Shariff took his GCE 'O' Level examinations as a private candidate.[13] After which, he studied electrical engineering Ngee Ann Polytechnic.[14] He furthered his studies at Singapore Management University (SMU) and graduated with a degree in economics.[15]
Post-graduate studies
Abdul Shariff holds a master’s degree in tri-sector collaboration from SMU.[16]
Workers' Party - Grassroots involvement
Abdul Shariff began volunteering with the Workers’ Party (WP) in 2012.[17] He has experience doing grassroots work in the Eunos division of Aljunied GRC. Abdul Shariff has also assisted at MP Pritam Singh’s Meet-the-People sessions, welfare outreach programmes and other events.[18]
Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (East Coast GRC)
Abdul Shariff was introduced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate on 28 June 2020.[19] According to his personal profile on WP his hopes for Singapore are:[20]
1. That all understand that political opposition is a necessary part of a democracy to ensure checks and balances, good governance and voters’ policy choices.
2. Acceptance that the values and principles enshrined in the pledge are not mere aspirations but targets.
3. That the poor, elderly, single-mothers (including unwed ones), ethnic minorities, the disabled, and other groups are not excluded from the vision of an inclusive society and that misconceptions about them are dispelled.
4. The building of a harmonious society held together by genuine understanding and appreciation between diverse groups and not mere tolerance for one another due to compulsion by law.
With 46.59 per cent of the votes, the Workers' Party team lost East Cost GRC to the People's Action Party (PAP) team led by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Wee Keat.[21]
