MYRNE is a Singaporean DJ and producer. The moniker MYRNE is a combination of Manfred’s and his idol’s - David Bryne - names.[1] David Byrne was the main songwriter and lead singer of the American band, Talking Heads. Most notably in 2015, Manfred was signed to the record label Mad Decent, which belongs to Grammy-award-winning producer Diplo.[2] Having used to DJ regularly at a club in Singapore called ‘Vanity’, he now performs on notable local and international stages.[3] He has also collaborated with internal artists such as Hawaiian producer graves and Singaporean artists like Sam Rui and Gentle Bones.
Background
Manfred had started his musical journey with playing the trombone at St Michael’s School, or St Joseph’s Institution Junior today, and taking classical piano lessons. When he was 15, he read the book ‘How Music Works’ by David Byrne which changed his perceptions of music production.[4]
Manfred taught himself how to programme beats on a laptop and honed his skills by dissecting newly released tracks while gathering feedback from his friends on his music. During this period, electronic dance music (EDM) had also started to become popular and he began to explore and compose his own EDM tracks.
By the second year of Junior College, he had close to 10,000 followers on SoundCloud.[5] During his time in St. Andrews Junior College, he also started DJ-ing for chalet parties but eventually moved on to producing his own songs which he played in clubs.[6]
In 2015, Manfred was discovered by Diplo’s record label Mad Decent, when the label’s creative director Paul Devro chanced upon his rendition of ‘To Ü’ on SoundCloud. After working on his five-track EP and sharing it with Diplo, he was formally signed to the label.[7]
