Early life & family
Shawn Huang was born in 1982 as Ingkiriwang Shawn Wei Zhong.[5] In 1989, his parents changed his name to Huang Wei Zhong Shawn in a deed poll. In a Facebook post dated 28 June 2020, he explained that he was misinformed about the validity of his name when he applied for his National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) at 12 years old. He says:
"I recently looked into the matter again, and confirmed that what I had been told while in primary school was incorrect, and my deed poll name has been valid all along. I therefore decided to henceforth use my legal surname Huang, which was intended by my parents for me."[6]
Shawn Huang was born in Singapore and is a Singapore citizen by birth.[7]

Shawn Huang graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 2006 as a Top Military Graduate. Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Jurong GRC)
Shawn Huang was introduced to the public as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 26 June 2020.[10] He is set to contest in the Jurong GRC for the 2020 General Election.[11] According to the PAP's website, he says that:
"We must give everyone opportunities to do well, contribute to others, and have a meaningful life."[12]
Shawn Huang had been volunteering in Taman Jurong, which is part of Jurong GRC, before he was announced as a candidate.[13] Following the election results, the People's Action Party team won Jurong GRC with 74.62 per cent of the votes.[14]
Online allegations
Shawn Huang came under fire when rumours of him being rude at the 2018 National Day Parade surfaced. In a now deleted post by a Facebook user, Lin Leo, Shawn Huang allegedly took offence at being served the same food as the participants and showed his displeasure by throwing the food onto a table in front of two servicemen.[15] Shawn Huang took to Facebook to shed light on this incident. In his post, he clarified that his group had not been catered any lunch and he had asked the Warrant Officer (WO) if he could have a packet of food.[16] The officer declined and he went to find his own lunch. On his return, he found a pack of food placed on his table.[17] Having already eaten at that point, he returned the food. He says:
"I told the WO that I no longer needed the ration and politely passed the ration back."[18]
Shawn Huang also stated that he had attempted to contact the Facebook user but was unable to do so since the post was removed.[19] Lin Leo later made a statement to retract her allegations, and noted that she may have been "too harsh" in her original post.[20]
