Muhammad Azhar Bin Abdul Latip (born 1986) is a small-business owner and gig-economy worker. In June 2020, he was announced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections.[1][2]

Background

Muhammad Azhar entered the marine insurance industry after graduating from university.[3][4] He first worked as a claims specialist with the Singaporean firm, Marine Claims Office before becoming an insurance broker with the international broking house, Georg Dunker.[5][6] In 2014, Muhammad Azhar lost his left leg when he met with a serious road traffic accident.[7][8] He plans to train as a para-athlete and hopes to represent Singapore in international competitions.[9] As of June 2020, Muhammad Azhar is self-employed. He works as a Grab driver and runs a small business. He is divorced with a three-year-old child.[10]

Education

Muhammad Azhar attended Guangyang Primary School and then transferred to Bedok North Primary School. He was then a student at Bedok View Secondary School and subsequently, Meridian Junior College.[11] In 2007, he furthered his studies at National University of Singapore (NUS) where he majored in Political Science and graduated in 2011.[12][13][14]

General Elections 2020

Muhammad Azhar was introduced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate on 25 June 2020.[15][16][17] As someone with a disability, he advocates for a more inclusive Singapore society.[18] He wants to be a voice for the vulnerable, disadvantaged and the disabled.[19] According to his profile on the Workers’ Party website, his hopes for Singapore are:[20] 

1. To have complete transparency, fairness and accountability in all areas of government, public administration and the economy.

2. A political system allowing greater representation of ethnic minorities in all areas of governance.

3. Creating a society whose emphasis is not on class and status, and where the weak and vulnerable are protected and given the necessary assistance.

He joined the Workers’ Party (WP) because he "strongly believes in having a strong alternative voice in parliament".[21]

Workers’ Party - Grassroots involvement

Muhammad Azhar’s involvement with the Workers’ Party began when he became a volunteer in Aljunied GRC assisting with food distribution programmes and community outreach initiatives.[22] He has experience with grassroots work in the Kaki Bukit Division of Aljunied GRC with MP Faisal Manap and in Fengshan SMC (which has been absorbed into East Coast GRC).[23][24]
