Personal life

Andrea received her secondary education at Zhonghua Secondary School. After which, she attended Victoria Junior College. Andrea and her partner Imran met with the help of mutual friends in junior college and the two had connected via the online platforms of MSN and Friendster.[2] In 2018, Andrea and Imran got engaged[3] having been in a committed relationship of 11 years.[4] Andrea opted to further her studies in English Literature at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In 2012, Andrea deferred her degree in order to focus on her budding career as an influencer in Singapore.[5]

Andrea has lent her support to several social causes in Singapore and overseas. She has worked with the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre as well as Singapore Girls’ Home.[6] In December 2018, Andrea and her father volunteered overseas with Operation Hope Foundation (Instagram account) where she helped to distribute clothing and school supplies to primary school students at a rural village in Siem Reap, Cambodia.[7]

Andrea started her blog in 2013 when she had been pursuing her degree at NTU.[8] In a 2014 interview with Senatus, a lifestyle magazine, Andrea stated that she had been motivated by the producers of ClickNetwork to reach out to her audience through a platform outside of YouTube.[9]

Currently, her site has a team of 4 (including herself) that regularly creates fashion, lifestyle and beauty related written content.[10] The team has worked with numerous clientele ranging from airlines such as AirAsia and Qatar Airways to lifestyle and fashion brands like Kate Spade and Adidas.[11] Apart from advertorials for clients, the site has a devoted section for Andrea's personal reflections and life updates.[12]

In 2015, HippoNetwork, a digital advertising agency in Singapore ranked dreachong.com first in terms of Google searches for "Fashion Blogger Singapore".[13][14] In 2018, Andrea and her team conceptualised and launched #DCHoliday - a festive collection of Drea Chong's brand merchandise that will be released during the holiday season.[15] The collection was launched in November 2018 with a DC Planner designed by Andrea herself and Shilin Chen and a DC chocolate bar in collaboration with Fossa Chocolate.[16]

Newsworthy incidents

Daryl Aiden Yow incident (2018)

For information on the incident, see Daryl Aiden Yow Incident.

In 2018, popular local influencer Daryl Aiden Yow was under fire after it was discovered that he had passed artificially composed and edited stock pictures as his own. Due to Andrea Chong’s close relationship to Daryl, many netizens on Instagram questioned the authenticity of her photos as well. In response to the criticism, Andrea had spoken out on Instagram and stated that her photos are not photoshopped. She also referred a particular netizen to contact her legal team to obtain raw images if needed as proof.[41]

Mover’s inappropriate behaviour (2017)

In 2017, Andrea spoke out about an alleged incident with a mover that she had hired. The mover had accidentally sent Andrea a text addressing her attire by claiming that she wasn’t wearing a bra.[42] In response to this, Andrea had taken to Facebook (Facebook post) to address the issue and voice her opinions about the inappropriate objectification of females while listing previous relevant encounters as well. She ended her post discouraging men from displaying such unsolicited behaviour.

Standard Chartered Marathon Bib incident (2015)

In 2015, Andrea was deemed as the most photogenic runner when she was photographed running at the Standard Chartered Marathon. After her photo was uploaded online, netizens identified that she was wearing a bib number that was registered under the name ‘Kulvin Kaur’, who was actually an intern working for marketing and public relations firm Edelman Singapore.[43] As a result, many people had doubts towards the authenticity of the photograph, citing the possibility of it being staged for Andrea’s client Adidas.
