Joakim Gomez is a Singaporean radio presenter and host. As of September 2019, he hosts ‘The Shock Circuit’ on 987FM with Sonia Chew. Previously, he was partnered with Gerald Koh on 987FM's 'The Bro Code'. Joakim started his radio career in December 2012 when he joined 987FM part-time upon completing his National Service. In 2006, Joakim placed fifth in the second season of Singapore Idol alongside individuals like Hady Mirza and Paul Twohill.[1] In 2014, Joakim performed in HOTPANTS, a theatre production written and directed by Dick Lee.[2] He also participated in the President’s Star Charity show in 2014,[3] 2015[4] and 2017.[5]
Background
Joakim is of Korean-Indian descent, with a Korean mother and Indian father. He is also a long-time fan of Manchester United Football Club.[6] Joakim attended Chong Boon Secondary School and has a diploma in theatre from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).[7] He served as a student councillor and student ambassador while studying at Chong Boon Secondary School.[8]
During his National Service, Joakim was in the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company. He hosted formal SAF dinners attended by the Minister of Defence and other foreign dignitaries as well as Recruit’s Evenings events. Joakim was noticed by the NDP committee after he stood in as host for one of the National Education shows and preview shows.[9]
Personal advocacy
Joakim joined several local personalities such as Sonia Chew, Roystan Tan and Andie Chen for the #LifeBeyondGrades campaign in 2018. The Instagram campaign reminds students and parents that future success is not solely determined by grades on a report card.[10]
Career highlights
Radio (2014 - Present day)
Between January 2014 and January 2015, Joakim was the presenter for a newly launched morning show called 'The Wake Up Call' on 987FM alongside Sonia Chew.[11] From February 2015 to January 2017, Joakim was paired with Gerald Koh for a new evening show called 'The Bro Code' as part of an overhaul in radio shows across the Mediacorp radio stations.[12]
Joakim also hosted '987 Home on Saturdays', a weekend segment featuring music by local artists. From January 2017 onwards, Joakim is partnered with Sonia Chew for 'The Shock Circuit with Sonia and Joakim'.
Singapore Idol Season 2 (2006)
Joakim competed in the second season of Singapore Idol at 17 years old. Joakim made it to the Top 5, despite the criticism over his vocals.[13]
After Singapore Idol, Joakim landed a one-year contract with MediaCorp to star in the second episode of 'Lifeline', alongside Gurmit Singh[14] and Okto's youth drama series 'The Band'.[15] Joakim joined Mediacorp after completing his National Service.

Television
Alongside Sonia Chew, Joakim hosted ‘In My Backyard’, a reality show where celebrity teams compete against each other around various neighbourhoods in Singapore. The show debuted on 4 March 2018 and had 11 episodes.[16]

Joakim started hosting events during his National Service. In 2012, he first hosted the National Day Parade alongside veteran entertainers like Jean Danker, Gurmit Singh, Suhaimi Yusof and Sharon Au.[29]
