Raymond Lye Hoong Yip (born 1966) is a Singaporean politician and the managing partner of Union Law LLP, which he co-founded in 2014. In the 2020 General Elections, he was fielded as a People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate in the newly formed Sengkang group representation constituency (GRC).[1]
Background
Raymond Lye founded Union Law LLP in January 2014 and is one of the firm's managing partners as of July 2020.[2] He is also an independent director of two listed companies - SK Jewellery Group Limited[3] and Goodland Group Limited.[4] Prior to that, he has held positions in the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and was on a panel that deliberated issues concerning Singapore's defence and foreign affairs.[5]
Early life & family
Raymond Lye grew up in a low-income household and recalls moving from one rental flat to another during his childhood years.[6] As of June 2020, he is married with three children.[7]
Education
A recipient of the Dentons Rodyk & Davidson LLP Scholarship, Raymond Lye graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with Second Class (Upper) Honours in Law.[8] He was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1991, a year after he completed his university studies.[9]
Community & Grassroots outreach
In his candidate introduction speech, Raymond Lye shared that he has been engaged in community outreach for over 25 years.[10] On a grassroots level, he has volunteered with the People’s Action Party (PAP) in Sengkang, Punggol and Pasir Ris.[11] He is also the chairman of the Punggol East Citizens Consultative Committee and the publicity director for the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council.[12] He has volunteered in the education, healthcare and law sectors.[13] Raymond Lye has received the following awards for his contributions in serving the community.

Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Sengkang GRC)
Raymond Lye was introduced as a People’s Action Party candidate on 25 June 2020 and contested in Sengkang GRC.[16] He has shared plans to create a town council for the newly carved out GRC if his team was elected.[17] On the party’s website, Raymond says that:
"We leave no Singaporean behind."[18]
The Sengkang GRC PAP team lost to the Workers’ Party team, having garnered 48 per cent (47.87%) of the casted votes.[19][20]
