Edward Chia Bing Hui (born 1984) is a Singaporean politician and the co-founder and managing director of the food and beverage company, Timbre Group. In June 2020, he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections and contested in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.[1] As of 10 July 2020, he is an elected Member of Parliament (MP).

Background

Edward Chia co-founded Timbre Group at 21 years old before entering university.[2] In a video that was published on 29 June 2020, he shared that Timbre began as an idea to provide musicians in Singapore a platform to showcase their talent while earning a living from their craft.[3] In 2004, he won the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Gold Award for his work at the Timbre Group.[4]

Edward Chia was born in 1984 to a father who ran an events company and a mother who was a housewife.[5] He has two younger siblings.

Education

Edward Chia went to Maris Stella High School.[6] He then studied at National Junior College before furthering his studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS).[7] He graduated in 2007 with a double degree in Economics and Political Science.[8]

Timbre Group

Co-founder & Managing Director (2005 - present day)

Edward Chia and his business partner, Danny Loong, founded Timbre Group in 2005.[9] The Timbre Group's first outlet was at The Substation[10] before it expanded to include another outlet at the Arts House and a bilingual live music and dining venue called Switch by Timbre X. Apart from these venues, the Timbre Group also operates social-enterprise hawker centres like the 700-seater Timbre+ [11] and also the Yishun Park Hawker Centre that consists of 43 stalls.[12][13]

Edward Chia was introduced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate on 24 June 2020.[14] On the PAP website, he is quoted to have said:

"I believe in the strength of communities because it has the grit and gumption to overcome challenges and seize opportunities. I hope to be part of your community so that we can build a brighter future for all of us."[15]

The People's Action Party team won Holland-Bukit Timah GRC with 66.36 per cent of the votes.[16]
