Choo Shaun Ming (born 1997) is a Singaporean politician and a law undergraduate from the National University Singapore (NUS).[1][2] In June 2020, he was announced as a Progress Singapore Party (PSP) candidate for the 2020 General Elections and contested in Chua Chu Kang GRC.[3][4][5] Choo Shaun Ming is the youngest candidate in the 2020 Singapore General Elections.[6]
Background
Choo Shaun Ming has done pro bono work with the NUS Pro Bono office for migrant workers under the non-profit organisation, Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2).[7][8]
Early life & family
Choo Shaun Ming says that he comes from an "ordinary Singaporean family".[9] His father worked in real estate before retiring and his mother teaches business and the Malay language at an international school. As such, he can also speak conversational Malay. Choo Shaun Ming has an older brother who is a lawyer.[10]
Education
Choo Shaun Ming was a student at Anglo-Chinese School (Junior).[11] He skipped a grade in primary school, which makes him one of the seven children who had been allowed to do so by the Ministry of Education (MOE) between 2000 to 2013.[12][13] He then attended Raffles Institution from 2010 to 2014 and subsequently Raffles Institution (Junior College).[14][15] In 2018, he furthered his studies as a law student at the National University of Singapore (NUS).[16][17]
Progress Singapore Party (PSP) - Involvement
Choo Shaun Ming joined the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) in 2019, at the beginning of his third year in university. He began by distributing party materials such as tissue packets, before becoming more involved in the party’s activities by participating in walkabouts and meeting the residents.[18]
Politics
General Elections 2020 - Candidate (Chua Chu Kang GRC)
Choo Shaun Ming was introduced as a Progress Singapore Party (PSP) candidate on 23 June 2020.[19][20] According to the PSP website, he is concerned with matters involving Singapore's workforce such as job security and satisfaction.[21] When asked about his reason for joining politics, he reflected on how the current government policies have affected him and his peers. Even after taking on extra jobs and setting up their own businesses, many of his friends still struggle to afford their own housing.[22][23] He says:
“I felt the need to represent them, and to voice their concerns in Parliament,”[24]
In a one-minute interview with Today Online, Choo Shaun Ming was asked about what kind of Singapore he wants to see. His response is as such:
“Regardless of our race and our age, religion, you know that we have an equal playing field.”[25]
With 41.36 per cent of the votes, the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) team lost Chua Chu Kang GRC to the People's Action Party team led by Minister for Health, Gan Kim Yong.[26]
