Filmhouse is a new independent cinema in Singapore set to open at Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road. The cinema occupies the three-screen space previously held by The Projector, which closed in August 2025.<ref name=":0">Lui, John. "[https://www.straitstimes.com/life/entertainment/new-indie-cinema-filmhouse-to-open-at-the-projectors-former-space-at-golden-mile-tower New indie cinema Filmhouse to open at The Projector's former space at Golden Mile Tower]" ''The Straits Times,'' 12 January, 2026. Accessed January 20 2026.</ref>

==History & background==
Filmhouse represents a continuation of Singapore's independent cinema scene following the closure of The Projector. The new cinema is backed by an unnamed Chinese national and Singapore permanent resident who is a cinephile working in a corporate role unrelated to film.<ref name=":0" /> The investor was a regular attendee at The Projector's screenings and was saddened by its closure.<ref name=":0" /><ref>Seet, Mingil. "[https://www.timeout.com/singapore/news/new-indie-cinema-set-to-take-over-the-projectors-former-space-at-golden-mile-complex-011326 New indie cinema set to take over The Projector’s former space at Golden Mile Complex]" ''Time Out Singapore,'' 13 January, 2026. Accessed 20 January 2026.</ref> He is funding Filmhouse independently and prefers to stay out of the spotlight.

The name "Filmhouse" was deliberately chosen because the team "wanted to create a home for films and film lovers,"<ref name=":1">Yeoh, Grace. "[https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/entertainment/filmhouse-new-independent-cinema-singapore-projector-576371 New indie cinema Filmhouse takes over from The Projector – will Singapore give it a second chance?]" ''Channel News Asia,'' 14 January, 2026. Accessed 20 January 2026.</ref> emphasizing their commitment to maintaining Singapore's indie film culture and providing a space for cinema beyond the mainstream.

==Management & programming==
The cinema is led by several alumni from The Projector. Sharon Tan, who was The Projector's former general manager, will reprise the same role at Filmhouse.<ref name=":0" /> Walter Navarro, who served as head of programming at The Projector for nearly a decade, will take on the same position at the new venue.<ref name=":0" />

Thomas Chia, director of Lighthouse Film Distribution, noted that the trust and goodwill built by the former Projector team cannot be easily replicated. He expressed hope that loyal patrons will return to support Filmhouse.<ref name=":0" />

Filmhouse will continue the indie cinema tradition with a mix of new releases, foreign films, art-house selections, and retrospectives.<ref name=":0" /> The cinema will also partner with embassies hosting national film festivals.<ref name=":0" />

===Opening film lineup===
The soft launch in late January or early February 2026 will feature several prestigious titles, including:

*Sentimental Value: A Norwegian-language drama that won the Grand Prix at Cannes 2025<ref name=":1" />
*Hamnet: Directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Paul Mescal, which won Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the 2026 Golden Globes<ref name=":1" />
*Rental Family: A film starring Brendan Fraser<ref name=":1" />

===Screening halls===
Filmhouse features three screening halls that retain nostalgic connections to The Projector. The original hall names: the Green Room, Redrum, and the Blue Room, are being retained as a knowing nod to the venue's past.<ref name=":2">Kashyap, Aditi & Nurjuwita, Dewi. “[https://thesmartlocal.com/read/indie-cinemas-sfs-somerset-filmhouse/ New Indie Cinemas Take Over The Projector’s Previous Spaces At Orchard Cineleisure & Golden Mile Tower]” ''TheSmartLocal,'' 13 January, 2026. Accessed 20 January 2026.</ref>

The Green Room will receive a 4K projection upgrade, while Redrum and the Blue Room will continue with 2K projection systems.<ref name=":2" /> While the venue is receiving a fresh coat of paint, select murals from The Projector will be preserved.<ref name=":2" />
